Product Description

Book Description

A tribute, from his daughter, to the highly popular writer and broadcaster, the late Clement Freud.

Product Description

Clement Freud, who died suddenly in April 2009, was a man of many parts. His life embraced a variety of careers, including TV chef, gambler, owner of a night club and several racehorses, radio broadcaster, adventurer and - not least - Member of Parliament. Yet, as his son Matthew declared at his funeral, it was Freud's writing that brought us closest to the man.

In addition to several books - notably the children's book Grimble (1968), Freud on Food (1978), The Book of Hangovers (1981) and a volume of autobiography, Freud Ego (2001) - he wrote on a vast range of subjects for newspapers and magazines, including the Observer, Sun, Financial Times, Sporting Life, Daily Mail, Tatler, Guardian, New Yorker and Racing Post. A Feast of Freud presents a generous helping of Clement Freud's best and most humorous writing on a broad sweep of topics, including his consuming passions of food, sport, politics and the absurdity of the human condition, reflecting his extraordinarily varied life through the prism of his distinctive deadpan humour.

From the pen of the man who once joked of being 'out-grandfathered' by the younger Winston Churchill comes this richly stocked volume that every Freud fan, no matter in which of his many lives they encountered him, will treasure.

"Do you mind if I read my own book now? " my wife enquired after the fifth time in an hour I'd said to her "let me read you this bit." A feast of Freud is the first book in a long time where I have laughed out loud. You read a bit, find it funny, and can't read any more because you keep laughing.

I didn't know Clement Freud's writings prior to reading this book, knowing him mainly from his appearances on Just a minute. How much have I missed? There is a piece about the way a toilet roll should be fitted. Very funny indeed; and quite right of course. The writing is excellent, very well observed and extremely funny. The title of the book "A feast of Freud" is a clue to how best to read it. It is indeed a feast and needs to be taken slowly. Put it down every now and then and go for a walk. It's a bit like a box of Belgian Chocolates, very rich and satisfying. And if you're not careful you will discover that it is crammed full of your favourite centres. A word of warning! Don't read this book in the bath you may very well drown.

Recommended reading for anyone - buy it, read it and then tell others.

I loved this book. Being full of Clement Freud's comments and anecdotes, it is as good as his own books. Emma has done him proud.

What a Feast 24 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
A very funny book and one you can delve into for 5 minuets and put down as time permits, it covers so many situations one has been in and did not think to respond in such a clever way.
