Product Description

With another world war brewing, women pilots from around the world made their way to England to join the Air Transport Auxiliary. The ATA was comprised of pilots who could not qualify to fly for the Royal Air Force.   Meg O’Brien, who fell in love with flying when her uncle took her up in his plane, wanted nothing more than to fly. Her family had other aspirations for the red haired girl—home, hearth, husband, and children. It was not for her and as soon as the opportunity arose, she joined her uncle in England, and soon joined the ATA.   Jo Laughlin, left to care for her sisters after the death of her father, took over the family crop dusting business in the panhandle of Texas. To supplement her income she joined other pilots and barn stormed throughout Texas and Oklahoma. When a friend, Midge Reister, suggested they go to England and join the ATA, Jo finally capitulated and found herself on a tramp steamer to England.   Sarah Faulkner, dubbed by the press as a flying debutante, tried to make a time record for the fastest time between London and Sydney Australia. When she runs out of gas and lands in a field near Brisbane Australia, she meets a poor young girl whose circumstances are fraught with abuse. In time, Sarah returns to Australia and eventually brings Brenda back to England with her. Brenda learns to fly and soon the two women join the ATA.   Their lives were not easy and often filled with danger and doubt but together the women form bonds that shaped their lives forever.

Excellent WW11 story 19 Oct 2011
By TerryB
Format:Kindle Edition
This book tells the story of a diverse group of women who all had one thing in common, their love of flying. It tells the story of how each of them came to join the Air Transport Auxiliary, the ATA, at the beginning of the second world war.

We have Australian Brenda who lived in poverty and was beaten and abused by her father. She was found by Sarah on one of her air record breaking trips. Sarah eventually returns to Australia, rescues Brenda and takes her to England, where she teaches her to fly. There is Meg from Ireland. Her Uncle Shamus taught her to fly.

Unfortunately, she is destined to marry according to her families wishes. Her Uncle Shamus persuades Meg's mother to let him take her to England, where he ensures she gets more flying hours in to enable her to apply for the ATA. Lady Millicent is English gentry, but her love of flying and her overwhelming wish to serve her country, makes her choose between flying and being with her family. Jo and Midge are American's. Midge persuades Jo to go to England and join the ATA.

All these women and others too, form part of an all women's branch of the ATA in Southampton. We read of their courage as they ferry sometimes barely airworthy planes, without communications or the means to defend themselves, from one place to another to free up male RAF pilots for battle..

The story has both excitement and romance. We are given a tasteful insight into the lives of these courageous women who did a dangerous but necessary job.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It was nice to have the background on the characters as it made me feel as though I knew each of them personally. The story is primarily about the women and the job they do, but does have a nice touch of romance as well. Definitely a book I would re read.

Couldn't Put it Down 19 Oct 2011
By kycoffin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Generally, I am not a reader of history. In spite of that, I loved "Fearless". O'Reilly has written a book that clearly shows great research into a topic that seems popular in recent works. I have read three, and find hers the best of the lot. Her characters are vivid and interesting, women I would love to have as friends. The romance, while not the core of the book, was sufficient to keep me interested. The historical reality this book brought home to me was its overwhelming value. I am too young to have lived during this part of American history, but am grateful to learn of the courage and sacrifices of our women aviators.

This is one of only a few books that I bought as an e-book, and then bought in print. It is a true "keeper".

Riveting WWII Historical Adventure 24 Oct 2011
By M. M. Goddard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Having visited the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) museum, U.S. Army Air Forces at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas, I can say that Ms. O'Reilly's depiction of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) is spot on. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with these women who committed their lives to honor and duty. I found their courage and sense of adventure to be riveting and the story a continuous page turner. Not only is this novel historically accurate and obviously well researched, Ms. O'Reilly allows a genuine likeability and camaraderie between her heroines and her readers. She has given these forgotten women the recognition they have long deserved.
