Since 1988, Kansas born rock singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge has been pouring out her own unique brand of gravel-voiced, power chorded, bruising rock arrangements. In the process Melissa has received 15 Grammy Award nominations, winning 2, one Academy Award and has sold 27 million albums worldwide and almost 4 million in the United States alone. She is admired for her mixture of confessional lyrics, pop-based folk/country rock, and raspy vocals.
"Fearless Love" is her 10th studio album, and one on which she was set to get back to the rock'n'roll roots of herself and her music, and the album is a testament to the fact that she did just that.
All the songs on the album are written by Melissa and reflect a broad spectrum of 'rock' inspired work encompassing hard rock, country rock and power ballads, all of which are ideally suited to her range of talents. The opening "Fearless Love", is an exciting belter which is sure to find plenty of airplay, and the following track "The Wanting Of You" is reminiscent of Cold Play with a piano-infused opening. Album stand-out "Company", with its mid-level tempo and its less-frenetic chorus, is the most enjoyable track on the album, closely followed by "Only Love".
"Miss California" is a twangy, guttural, screamer that really reconnects with her return to hard rock ambitions, as does "Nervous" and "Heaven On Earth". Surprisingly I was much taken with her slower ballads, mainly in the second half of the album, which include "To Be Loved", and "Gently We Row".
No other artist can better her for building up a song from gentle beginnings, stage-by-stage into a 'wall-of-sound' exciting, rousing finale, a good example being "Drag Me Away".
