Breath of fresh air 25 Oct 2008
Format:Audio CD
I rarely feel compelled to write a review about a new album Ive purchased, but when an album insists upon a repeat from beginning to end this is it. Another female rnb artist with a missy elliott inspired production could fall by the wayside as not too disimilar to many others akin currently in the charts. Dont get me wrong Im a huuggggeee fan of amerie, cassie, jennifer hudson, ciara etc etc but something beautifully talented and unique about Jazmine Sullivan really makes me hope she reaches the acclaim she so deserves.

BUY IT!!!!!!

Simply put this album is a serious MUST HAVE. You're really missing out without it, I hope she will be as big as she deserves to be.

**I wrote the above without even hearing the whole album - before I actually owned the CD and now I do gee whizz, I'm blown away. Since getting it 3 days ago I've not skipped one track because I wasn't feeling it (I skipped tracks 1&2 because I've rinsed her myspace page over the past few weeks). From one night stand & a song which asks her date if he minds her switching for his best friend to a song written about domestic violence, Ms Sullivan covers so much ground with eloquence and power that I'm genuinely shocked that it's a debut album. There is no-one quite like her on the market right now, I've seen her compared to many singers - Faith Evans, Lauryn Hill etc - but to be honest she is so versatile that none of these hold true, she is so unique and I'm surprised that she's not promoted over here. I hope to follow JS in her career and pray she goes from strength to strength, she deserves to be up there with the greatest divas one day. Every track is so different and some of these ballads are so touching - In Love With Another Man & Guilty - they make me want to cry and that's what I want in an artist!! Someone to truly touch my heart**

Jazmine Sullivan deserves to be a big star and with 4 grammy nominations already I think she will be. Up there with Alicia Keys' 'Songs in A Minor' for a quality debut album.

1.) Bust Your Windows. 5/5. This was the first song of Jazmine's that I heard purchased the album based on this song. The lyrics tell the story of getting revenge on a lover. Could be a massive hit.

2.) Need You Bad. 5/5. Again another fantastic track. It begin with a reggae influenced intro and leads into beautiful verses reminiscent of Lauryn Hill's vocals with a Sunshine Anderson-esq chorus.

3.) My Foolish Heart. 4/5. Not quite as good as the majority of the songs on the album but still better than anything in the charts. Her voice sounds similar to Faith Evans on this track.

4.) Lions, Tigers & Bears. 5/5. Strong contender for the best song of the album. Beautiful lyrics, vocals and music, "I'm not scared of Lions, Tigers & Bears but I'm scared of loving you, I'm not scared to perform at a sold out affair but I'm scared of loving you."

5.) Call Me Guilty. 5/5. Domestic violence is the theme of this track and how killing her man is justice for what he has done. The verses, chorus and adlibs at the end are all fantastic. Another of my favourites.

6.) One Night Stand. 5/5. A really catchy uptempo track, it's quite poppy but still good.

7.)After The Hurricane. 5/5. A lovely, chilled out ballad which has grown on me.

8.) Dream Big. 5/5. Another uptempo poppy track about Jazmine's dreams for making it in the music industry.

9.)Live A Lie. 4/5. In this song Jazmine sings about how she would rather live a lie than know the truth about a cheating boyfriend.

10.) Fear. 5/5. Another of my favourite tracks with fantastic lyrics about all the things that Jazmine's afraid of "I'm scared to to try 'cos I'm scared to fail, I'm scared to die, cos I'm scared of hell... I'm scared to learn, 'cos I'm scared of truth, I don't wanna gain wait so I'm scared of food..."

11.) In Love With Another Man. 5/5. A lovely piano ballad, again this one grew on me.

12.) Switch! (Bonus Track) 5/5. A fun upbeat track where Jazmine sings about how she wants to go out with her date's best friend. It doesn't quite fit with the rest of the album but I'm glad it's included as a bonus.

If you like Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, Sunshine Anderson, Sylenna Johnson and Alicia Keys then buy this album. The lyrics (Jazmine co-wrote all 12 tracks), vocals, music and production are top quality. An amazing debut album - highly recommended!
