Hmm, slightly different from the usual easy-going grown-up pop Ben Folds usually produces. This was a pretty low key release - In Fear of Pop Vol 1, Ben is making this for himself, a kind of extended musical joke. All the tracks are different in style and sound, some are for laughs, some are just plain weird. It's kind of like a musical freak-out after years of producing tightly-written pop songs.
The most memorable is William Shatner on 'In Love'. Ben Folds did the right thing here resurrecting Shatner's frankly hilarious spoken word approach to music. This is the funniest thing I heard until Shatner covered Common People by Pulp. Most of the rest of the tracks are pretty strange, and aren't exactly the sort of thing you would want to have on in the background. It's more of a talking point really, like having King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table by Rick Wakeman. So if you feel you have been listening to too much conventional music recently, buy this. Or if you just can't get enough of William Shatner's spoken word songs.
