Book Description

1 Jun 1991
Professor James Lowry doesn't believe in spirits, or witches, or demons. Not until one gentle spring evening when his hat disappears, along with four hours of his life. Now the quiet university town of Atworthy is changing; just slightly at first, then faster and more frighteningly each time he tries to remember. Lowry is pursued by a dark, secret evil that is turning his whole world against him while it whispers a warning from the shadows: "If you find your hat you'll find your four hours. If you find your four hours then you will die. . . ." - "A classic tale of creeping, surreal menace and horror . . . one of the really, really good ones." - Stephen King

5.0 out of 5 stars It does what it says on the title! 19 July 2001

I don't carry much favour with Hubbard's religious beliefs and I don't really dig his literary style - but I do say try this book. There is something deeply creepy about it,lingering in the memory like a bad recurring dream. Worth reading - some lovely scary touches.

'Psychologically affecting' - what Hubbard does best...

5.0 out of 5 stars A rather unique book 12 Mar 2001
By Eolake
Format:Paperback
"Fear" has been praised by some of the most important authors in the world, including Stephen King, Isaac Asimov, and many more.

There is a good reason for that, which is that the book is like no other book really. It is a horror story with no gore and silly masked murderers. And yet it is a story that few will ever forget. I think it may be the best that Hubbard wrote in his earlier career. (In general I like his books from the eighties better, you see.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Works for me 18 Oct 2010
By A buyer
Format:Paperback
There are some mixed reviews.
So I guess it depends on what you like and what mood you are in.

I'm on the side of the scared witless camp.
When I read it in bed into the small hours I was too afraid to go the bathroom.
It's only a short book so you can get through it quickly - which is good because it is very intense, almost unbearable.
The fear effect lasted for many days after I had finished it.
