I have just watched the first half of this series, the ones that were actually broadcast on US TV, and I actually would say that the overall consistency in quality is far better than in either series of Masters of Horror, Mick Garris's previous anthology series. There is less gore, true, but that does not make a good show all on its own. I guess the producers had to give in to certain restraints set by NBC, who are obviously much more strict on what they will allow for broadcasting than HBO or Showtime. But, these are clever & well-written stories, with some great twists, very good acting, and some very original concepts. In MoH, both series had highlights, whereas I thought the remaining episodes were average at best, with some actually very poor ones. With Fear Itself, everyone has put in a good episode, and it is hard to pull out a singular favourite. It is a shame that the show was cancelled, and has never seen light of day on these shores. Still, you can import this R1 dvd, or download them (not hard to find...) and I would highly recommend watching them.

"Masters of Horror" creator Mick Garris ("The Stand" and "Desperation") brings his dearly departed horror anthology series back to life for a brief network T.V. run with tighter controls, a reduced run time and a title plugged by Franklin D. Roosevelt himself but once again falls foul of the curse of cancellation.
This time round few of the big guns of the genre fail to bite with only horror-comedy legend John Landis making the move along with second stringers Stuart Gordon, Brad Anderson and Rob Schmidt who are joined by new blood that includes Breck Eisner, Ronny Yu, Darren Lynn Bousman, Mary Harron and Larry Fessenden.
The first and as it turned out only season floundered through its eight-week run with a few minor highlights and a lot of uninspired dross before taking a brief hiatus, to make way for coverage of the Olympics, from which it never returned leaving five un-broadcast episodes for international distribution and DVD debut.
The master of masters failed to secure the same concessions from the network executives at NBC as he had from the cable guys at Showtime and the ad-friendly punctuated pacing coupled with these constraints on creative freedom meant the series never even lived up to the meagre standards set by its predecessor.
