Book Description

5 Aug 2010

In early October 2004, Brendon Burns - a delusional, god-fearing, drug addict, manic depressive and award-winning comedian - has a vision of happiness. He imagines himself sitting with two friends in a convertible in the middle of a desert, and for once he feels totally in control of his life. With the (slightly inebriated) voices in his head assuring him that he can recreate this perfect moment, he clearly has no choice but to gather the troops and head out to the US of A in pursuit his dream...

Fear of Hat Loss in Las Vegas is the true story of four men - Brendon and his friends Barry Castagnola (the everyman), Paul Provenza (an Italian New Yorker, devout atheist, actor and movie director), and Keith (Barry's dad and best friend) - and their search for happiness and redemption in the heart of the Nevada desert. Demented, depraved, dangerously addictive and yet with a deep heart, soul and spirit, it is a tale of debauchery, mushrooms, fate, hookers, coincidence, stand-up comedy, aliens, Vegas and, ultimately, friendship. Rude, insane, in your face (and off their faces), it is the story of the perfect road trip.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas - unless of course it's really funny. Then Brendon will write a f**king book about it...

Review

Gutsy, poignant potty-mouthed comedy that'll heal your heart but break your funny-bone (Metro )

Just occasionally a comedy show is so good it is like falling in love. Long live Brendon Burns (Scotsman )

The best thing I've seen in a long, long time (Guardian )

Demented brilliance (The Sunday Times )

Not only has he been pushing back the boundaries of comedy for years, I'm quite certain he has no idea where they are (Jimmy Carr )

Book Description

3.0 out of 5 stars A troubling little number 25 Dec 2011
By Mrs. K. A. Wheatley TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Brendan Burns is a man on a mission. He has a vision that he will find spiritual enlightenment in the Nevada desert with two other men, all wearing hats. He wakes up the next morning and endeavours to make this happen. This is a tale of drunken and drug fuelled stupidity, male bonding at an almost religious intensity and lots of in jokes. I found it compelling to read, but to be brutally honest I'm not really sure why. I didn't find it very funny at all. It was more of an 'oh God! What next?' type thing. Written with the fervour of the alcoholic in the grip of his addiction it shows exactly what taking excess to excessive levels will do to you. How he didn't die is a miracle. It was interesting, absurdly compulsive and strangely entertaining but I'm glad they didn't ask me to go along.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book of the year! 8 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
Absolutely the best book I read last year... A great story, well written and incredibly funny. Don't want to spoil anything, just think 'The Hangover' on acid!

WARNING: a likely side affect of reading this book will be a burning desire to go on a road trip to Las Vegas!

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't expect a quiet read 22 Aug 2010
By Bantam Dave TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
It may sound like a strange description for a book but Fear of Hat Loss in Las Vegas is LOUD.

When you put together the components of the book it all makes sense though. It is written by an Australian, a race of people not known for being stand-offish or reticent. The authors day job is stand up comic, a profession not known to attract shrinking violets. The location of the book is Las Vegas, a city that is a temple to excess and is as brash & flash as it is possible to be.

This may be a travel book but not as we know it. If you want to learn a little about Las Vegas as you would from reading 'proper' travel books by 'proper' travel writers forget it. If you want to be amused though, and enjoy reading about a group of blokes having fun with the aid of alcohol and other mind altering substances and don't mind a liberal sprinkling of bad language this could be the book for you. Just don't expect a quiet read though.
