'Rich in psychological insight - Tope is particularly skilled in creating interesting and unique characters, and Thea is one of her best' Deadly Pleasures

Product Description

Mystery and intrigue in the beautiful Cotswold countryside

Following a string of disastrous house-sitting assignments, and with troubles in her recent personal life, Thea Osborne is understandably apprehensive about her latest commission: a wintery month in an isolated farmhouse with only an assortment of animals, including her loyal spaniel Hepzie, for company.

With the summer lushness of the Cotswolds turned icy grey, Thea spends her first few days exploring the tiny but beautiful hamlet of Hampnett, and the nearby town of Northleach. While discovering more of the surrounding area she meets some of the mysterious local characters: the unappreciated au pair from Bulgaria and the elusive Kate from a neighbouring farm. But then the weather turns extreme, and so do events.

When she stumbles across a man lying dead in a snow-filled field, Thea is once again at the heart of a mystery in the gorgeous Cotswold countryside…

Exciting and thought-provoking, with a plot which will have readers’ minds working overtime, the latest in the Cotswolds series shows author and heroine on top form once again.

More About the Author

Rebecca grew up on farms in the 1950s and 60s, and then went to Swansea University, where she did a BA in English and Philosophy. She had poems and short stories published in small magazines from that time on, but it was only after marrying, producing four children and working at a succession of part-time jobs that she got published with her first crime novel, A DIRTY DEATH. This book is based on childhood memories of farming life. The thrill of publication was slightly marred by the fact that the cow on the cover was a Friesian and not a Jersey. Rebecca still worries that people think she can't tell the difference...
The part-time jobs include freelance indexing and proofreading for London publishers; running antenatal classes for the NCT; counselling couples for Relate; and being the office girl for an undertaker. These were followed by several years as a milk recorder, involving cold dawn visits to mucky farms and working with the wide variety of herdsmen in charge. This experience features prominently in A DEATH TO RECORD. Both this and A DIRTY DEATH are to be reissued in 2012.
She currently writes the Thea Osborne Cotswolds crime series, which is gaining in popularity with every passing week.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compulsive reading 22 Oct. 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Having read all the previous Cotswold Mystery series this is the best so far. It is a book you find difficult to put down until you have finished it and then you wish it could go on for longer! You really do feel as though it is snowing outside and you are in the midst of winter. Very good story telling as usual with the characters coming to life on the page. Would recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Rebecca Top Hit! 13 Oct. 2010
I have read all of Rebecca Topes books and as a frequent visitor to the Cotswolds know a lot of the places in them, This is another Rebecca Hit, following Thea and Hepzi on another house sitting! Its an excellent whodunit and keeps you guessing right to the end ! You end up wanting to do the house sitting with Thea to see what she uncovers next ! Excellent!

Another brilliant work of fiction by Rebecca Tope, I was rivited to every page and would read far into the night, not wanting to put it down. I have now read all her books that have been published and cant wait for her last two to be released in March. Please write some more!

3.0 out of 5 stars in true rebecca tope tradition 21 Dec. 2013

much as others in series - great if you like that. Follows the usual format, housesitter in lonely property comes across body/ies, colourful local characters introduced, reader guesses, sometimes right. Not as well constructed as better writers but ok.

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric 15 Oct. 2012
By Mel
I really enjoyed this story. I read it during the sunny afternoons of late summer and yet it totally captured the icy cold snow of January and dark evenings. An assortment of believable characters and events combne to produce a perfect winter mystery. What I particularly liked was the extra bit at the end, when the murders have been solved and we are told what happened next. Too many stories end abruptly, seeming incomplete.
This is, however, the only Rebecca Tope, story I've read and although I tried another, set in another season and another village, I found it too much like the first and didn't continue. Perhaps, if I'd read them in order it may have been better. I may well read another at a later time.
