Review

Without doubt one of the best female food writers around - witty, fun and great recipes that work! (Jamie Oliver )

Product Description

For the past 5 years, Fay Ripley has been cooking for her growing family. Spurred on by the lack of inspiration out there, she has written this cookbook full of recipes for all the family. The vital ingredient is that you only need to cook one meal. She was fed up of having to cook separately for her 1-year-old, then having to knock up something for her 5-year-old and then, with the kids in bed, finally think about cooking something to enjoy with her husband. So she started working out meals that all of them could eat together - not separate ingredients, age dependent.

This book offers suggestions and inspiration to feed your family. It's there to get you in the swing so that you can find 15 minutes to knock up something that you're proud to see them eat. The idea is to cook food that you can remove your babies' and kids' portions from, before adding the more challenging ingredients for yourselves.

In Fay's words: 'I am living this. It's easy. I've kept it simple. Sometimes I get it wrong. Sometimes I have to throw pans away (multi-tasking can lead to burnt food). But the Italians do it. So why can't we?'

Very good 20 Jun 2011

I really like this book. There are some lovely recipes, including the Sweet Carrot Soup, Butternut Squash Soup, Bay Bird (chicken), Lemon Drizzle cake, Steak and Chips, Orange and Ginger Chicken Casserole, Potatoes Dauphinoises, to name a few.

The recipes are well-presented and easy to follow. I appreciate Fay's sense of humour so enjoy a chuckle when reading the book. The photos are lovely and encourage you to give the recipes a go. I'd agree with other reviewers who say the recipes aren't cheap - this is definitely "Yummy Mummy", metropolitan cooking and I therefore wouldn't expect to be cooking one of them each day. I also haven't in practice found that many of the recipes work for the whole of our family (which includes a 4 year old and a 1 year old) but no matter, the recipes are still lovely.

A final comment on the cake recipes: these rely heavily on plain flour (no self-raising flour to be seen) and I have therefore found them tricky, other than the Lemon Drizzle cake, which contains a lot of (expensive) ground almonds.

In summary: great book but be aware that the recipes are not budget options.

Fantastic! 28 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover
I am so pleased I bought this cookbook! Its great if you need abit of inspiration as I did when you kind of get stuck serving the same meals day in day out. Her recipes are healthy, simple to follow, no unheard of ingredients and very scrummy! In having it for just a week I have made 3 delicious meals, I highly reccommend the salmon boursin penne and sweet carot & lentil soup. Also my 16mth old is enjoying what Im making for him and he can be fussy. I own many cookbooks and most of them never used (dust collectors now) but I know this will be used time and time again - there are so many other dishes Im eager to make. Buy it you'll be glad you did :)

I never normally submit a review for books but I have been so impressed with this book! The simple philosophy of healthy ingredients adapted to meals to suit the whole family is fantastic. The recipes are simple and don't involve huge lists of ingredients or complex processes. The recipes are all appealing and Fay's light hearted and unpretentitious text refreshing and friendly. The dishes I've made from it are the best things I've made in ages- this book has definitely helped me get my cooking mojo back. Well done Fay!
