The music on this CD exudes beauty and serentity from the first bar to the last. Seamless waves of exquisite sound performed by a group of peerless singers; The quality of the recording is impeccable.
All five CDs of this series are of the same exceptional standard. The Cardinall's Musick bring to life the music of an unjustly neglected early Tudor composer who enjoyed considerable royal favour in his lifeteime.
Why so few reviews ? Fayrfax has been overshadowed by his great contemporary Taverner not to mention a large group of Renaissance greats (Tallis, Byrd, the Flemish masters ...).
Nevertheless I play these five CDs regularly with great pleasure and would advise anyone who may stumble across this review to give Fayrfax "a fair hearing".
A note on the first piece "Salve regina". Based on the compositional style expert opinion casts considerable doubt on whether
Fayrfax composed it. If this be so an anonymous composer deserves credit for a sublime creation.

HASH(0x99ec33fc) out of 5 stars Another Gem 15 May 2010

It's wonderful to have an appreciation of many different genres of music and then discover one you knew very little about yet became very fond of it very quickly.

That was I and old English choral music. First a Chanticleer concert here. Then a couple of The Tallis Scholars CDs. The doors opened and the pickings were many.

The Eton Choirbook five CD set introduced me to a whole set of composers. This isn't my first Fayrfax CD, but having one, I wanted others and this Vol. 4 is very pleasing.

The range of expression here is broader than on the other CD. I find a certain sweetness to his music and The Cardinall's Musick evokes this masterfully.

I see these CDs with just one review, almost always five stars and I wonder if others are experiencing what I have experienced, finding another rare gem of a CD buried in Amazon's copious offerings?
