This is sub-titled "Original Recordings 1935-1959" but only around half of the numbers are from the original productions, plus three contemporaneous recordings by other artists (accompanied by Debroy Somers), and two from later film versions. With two exceptions the remainder date from the fifties. That said, it offers a well-remastered selection of songs from the eight shows he wrote between 1935 and 1951, the year of his death. They feature such artists as Dorothy Dickson, Richard Tauber, Elizabeth Welch, Mary Ellis, Vanessa Lee, Lizbeth Webb and Cicely Courtneidge. Many of these songs were enormous hits in their day. The CD has been made to look like a miniature 78, and the result is a treat for lovers of the musical theatre.

This new 22 track compilation is an interesting mix of contemporary, cast and later recordings of Ivor Novello works. I like the larger format print used on the liner notes by regular Peter Dempsey as it makes it easier to read. The music on offer is presented in order of the shows so starts off with "Glamorous Night" (May 1935) with a Debroy Somers medley of music & songs. Next comes "Careless Rapture" (Sept 1936) original cast recording plus a 1959 Rita Williams singers recording. "The Crest of a Wave" (Sept 1937) again with some original cast recording from Dorothy Dickson plus Ivor Emmanuel with the Rita Williams singers in 1959. "The Dancing Years" (March 1939) restaged in 1942. Contemporary recordings from 1939 plus 1949 & film soundtrack 1958. "Arc De Triomphe" (Nov 1943) 2 from Mary Ellis & Elisabeth Welch. "Perchance to Dream" (April 1945) "his victory presentation" contemporary recordings from Richard Tauber; Anne Ziegler & Webster Booth. "Kings Rhapsody" (1949) recordings from 1949 original cast plus from the 1955 film. "Gays the Word" (Feb 1951) was the perfect role for Cicely Courtneidge and the show stopper "Vitality" is here along with other songs backed by the Saville Theatre orchestra. The final track comes from "The Dancing Years" and is "My Dearest Dear" featuring Julie Bryan; Ivor Emmanuel & the Rita Williams singers (1959). All told a wide ranging compilation from a goodly number of artists backed up by well researched liner notes and attractive presentation. Running time approx 73 minutes. Good sound quality and good value too.

For a single disc of the music of Ivor Novello this must be hard to beat, but it should have the word "SOME" before "original recordings". Perhaps it would have been better put "Interesting Recordings". Very good sleeve information for a budget price disc but I wish 'designers' weren't allowed anywhere near such things as the track listings are difficult to read. Soppy case - but it does mean the photo of 'Dear Ivor' is much better.

A refreshing change this collection.

There's been many CD releases of Ivor's music over the years, but for the most part they've been the same selections/compilations simply rearranged - with perhaps the exception of a few extras thrown in to push sales to those who already have most of the material. Here we have some lesser know songs sung by not so well-known singers which make this release an interesting CD for any collector of Novello's music. Singers include a few regulars with many unique performances. The transfers however are not the best and a bit furry, but a lovely collection nonetheless with nice artwork.

An excellent compilation of original recordings of this well loved and sadly often today forgotten music.
I would recommend for any Novello fan.

More or less cover versions so it means that even with the same number of tracks there's no repeats from Prism's Ultimate Collection
Possibly Ivor Novello is the only big name not to have come to the attention of today's artists like Sting or Elvis Costello who reguarly make covers for tribute albums and with tribute albums for Cole Porter,George Gershwin and Noel Coward it can only be a matter of time

As a lover of Ivor Novello songs, this was a must for me. Growing up listening to Family Favourites, etc., on the radio, majority of the contents of this CD are very familiar to me. Anyone who has a similar liking for this music will love this selection, I'm sure.

What a very clever composer and this era is beautifully arranged with the original artists of the time.
Quite a selection of artists and the recordings sound great. Good value for happy memories
