4.0 out of 5 stars A very good collection 18 Nov 2010

I have to agree with another reviewer that I have found myself changing the some of the stories to make them less frightening or horrific!! Otherwise my son would be having nightmares - he has a lively imagination! Great illustrations though and a big sturdy book, a book to keep forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best 17 Feb 2007
By Cyber Gypsy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I am extremely fussy about the quality of literature I read to my children. We have a huge bookshelf full of children's books. This one takes the prize on so many levels;

1. Quality and beauty of the writing, its use of poetic words and sentence structure.

2. Not dumbed down for children, therefore challenges their thinking and imagination, while also retaining its original messages about virtues and goodness.

3. Exquisite pictures.

4. Keeps my son's attention more than anything. He has learnt far more from this book than any other.

5. Not boring for adults who have to read the stories unteen times!

I have not found a better version of the Grimms fairy tales.

Some of the stories do contain some gory details, but if the parent feels they need to, they can easily miss a paragraph without losing content.

After reading Archipova's fairy-tale versions, it's difficult to return to other books, since everything else thereafter sounds inferior to the ear!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous illustration, fantastic edition, disappointing typography mistakes 26 Mar 2009

I've been looking for a book with Archipova's illustrations for quite some time. Unable to find any currently available in Russian, I decided to purchase this one. The book is fantastic. It's large (8,5 by 11,5 inches), contains 16 fairy tales with beautiful illustrations on EVERY page, quality of paper is also excellent.
Would make a wonderful gift.

Unfortunately, I already found at least 2 problems with it:
1) A picture and the text were not aligned well, so the picture covers first letters of a whole paragraph. You can still figure out what words are, but it's annoying and surprising in a rather high quality edition
2) The order of 2 sentences got switched, making the dialogue somewhat incomprehensible until you figure out what is going on.

Considering I've only read a couple of stories, I'm expecting more of such to surface when the rest is read. Big disappointment in an otherwise great edition.

A small aside on the other review: Archipova is an illustrator, not a translator/editor, so someone else is to thank for the quality of translation from German.
