Amazon.co.uk Review

That delightful couple from The Awful Truth, Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, revisit the world of marital confusion. Presuming his wife to be dead, Grant remarries--on the same day that his bedraggled spouse (that's Dunne) returns. Seems she's been stranded on a desert island for seven years (with strapping hunk Randolph Scott, too). The moment Cary spots his resurrected wife, as an elevator door slides shut, is one of the many funny gags in this comedy, and the final sequence is memorably wacky. Awful Truth director Leo McCarey prepared the film, but it was directed by author Garson Kanin. The two stars are so adept at farce, and so effortless in conveying their characters' mutual affection, that the movie triumphs over the whopper of a plot device. It was supposed to be remade as the ill-fated Marilyn Monroe film Something's Got to Give, and ended up Move Over, Darling with Doris Day. --Robert Horton

Product Description

This long-forgotten gem in Renoir's canon is the director's only truly epic film. Made towards the end of France's left wing "Popular Front" government when Europe was on the brink of war, 'LA MARSEILLAISE' is a markedly political film about a country in flux. With an innovative new-reel style, the film follows a cross-section of people - from the citizens of Marseilles to Louis XVI - who are affected by the shifting political and social forces in the early days of the French revolution. ABOUT THE DVD: This is a DVD release by OPTIMUM RELEASING for the UK market (Region 2 PAL format - which will play on all standard DVD players in the UK and the rest of Europe - buyers outside of Europe will need a multi-region player in order to view it) - The film is presented in its original BLACK & WHITE and FULL SCREEN format (4:3 aspect ratio) and runs for a total of 126 minutes - the AUDIO is the original FRENCH language and MONO - SUBTITLES are in English language only - SPECIAL FEATURES - a documentary about the film 'A Look at The Marseillaise'.

The second of three pairings of Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, this is my favourite. On the day she is pronounced dead, Irene Dunne comes back home after seven years in a deserted island - only to find out her husband (Cary Grant) has just remarried. Now all he has to do is tell is new wife and choose his favourite. A very funny and witty screwball comedy follows. Both players are at their best, in what is clear made to capitalise on their previous hit "The Awful Truth" and Garson Kanin (more famous for his screenplays for George Cukor) lets them do what they do so well. Sadly the DVD has no extras.

He's full of carrots. 31 Oct 2011

After seven years of his wife, Ellen, presumably being lost at sea, Nick Arden marries his latest flame, Bianca. Only to get on his honeymoon to find that Ellen has in fact survived, and spent the seven years on a tropical island with another man called Stephen Burkett.

My Favorite Wife is based around the Alfred Tennyson poem entitled "Enoch Arden". Numerous adaptations have been made, but few, if any, are as frothy as this Cary Grant and Irene Dunne starer. Grant and Dunne are re-teamed here after their massive success with the quite marvellous The Awful Truth in 1937, and tho the role of Ellen was touted to Jean Arthur, it was Dunne who grasped the role and created sizzling comedy once again with the fabulous Grant. The Awful Truth director Leo McCarey, was all set to direct this piece but a car accident put paid to that and the reins passed to jobber Garson Kanin, who aided by a firing on all cylinders cast, weaved a splendidly delightful picture.

Tho the movie's obvious charm lays with it's two main stars, it would be a big disservice to forget the contributions of Randolph Scott as Stephen Burkett and Gail Patrick as Bianca. Scott's laid back persona is perfect foil to Grant's more batty approach work, while Patrick in the tricky role of the neurotic second wife is fabulous, and it remains a mystery as to why she didn't go on to better and brighter things. Tho the ending is never in doubt, and the last quarter dries up on the gags front, My Favorite Wife still stands the test of time as a screwball picture of note, see it if you get the chance, it should brighten your day. 7.5/10

After their success in the wonderful 'The Awful Truth' three years before, Irene Dunne and Cary Grant were reunited for this fast moving and often hillarious film. Dunne plays Ellen, returning home after seven years shipwrecked to discover that her husband Nick has declared her legally dead and has re-married the snobbish Bianca so she decides to make him jealous when he finds out that Ellen was not alone for those seven years and had been shipwrecked with Stephen Burkett. Both Dunne and Grant are at their hillarious best (although never quite re-capturing the joy of their previous outing). The real comedy comes when Ellen nabs a short middle aged shoesalesman and introduces him to Nick as Burkett, unaware that the suspicious Nick had already sought and seen Burkett. There is also a hillarious turn from Granville Bates as the unwitting Judge (not to mention some perfectly charming turns from Scotty Beckett and Mary Lou Harrington as Nick and Ellen's children). The film was to be directed by Leo McCarey, director of 'The Awful Truth', but he was involved in a car accident before shooting so the 27 year old Garson Kanin took over. Grant and Dunne were re-united the following year for the more dramatic 'Penny Serenade'.
