Biography

The Felice Brothers are a close-knit band of two brothers and three longtime friends(all in their twenties). They are self-taught - not one of them played an instrument prior to the band’s inception in 2006 when they started busking in New York City subway stations. The Felice Brothers have released three full-length albums. The majority of their work was recorded in a converted chicken ... Read more in Amazon's The Felice Brothers Store

Product Description

Taking it to another level whilst keeping alive the great Folk/Rock movement The Felice Brothers have delivered the album of their career. UK tour in June around release and again in August. The Felice Brothers kicked off in 2006. They did what any delinquent youths, lost in upstate New York with dim job prospects would do: become obsessed with traveling the world and playing extremely loud rock and roll. After settling on minor matters like who plays what (Ian Felice- vocals/guitar, James Felice- accordion/keys/vocals, Greg Farley- fiddle/vocals, Josh Rawson- bass/vocals. Recent addition David Estabrook- old friend/new drummer – completes the current line up), the band procured instruments, cans of sardines and packed up tents and devoted their lives to studying the art of song craft. It was a long way to the top. The Felice Brothers' new album 'Favorite Waitress' marked the first time the band ever recorded in a proper studio. Produced by the band's longtime producer and collaborator Jeremy Backofen, the album is their most fully realized statement yet.

You live with some albums over time which may stand neglected for ages only to be replayed over and over a few years later upon discovering a lost classic. Others you try relentlessly to fathom consumed with the passion that at some point the album will reveal itself, but it never does. The Felice Brothers last album was the synth heavy "Celebration Florida" and sadly it fell into the later category, it was an album easier to admire than love.

Four years later the Felice Brothers return with a new album "Favourite Waitress" (2012's rambunctious "God Bless you amigo" was essentially a excellent mop up exercise). There is not a synth in sight and in a wry mea culpa Ian Felice has stated "We just wanted to make sure that no one would ever mistake us for a folk band ever again". "Favourite Waitress" is the closest album the band have released thus far which resembles their great live act and it is all the better for it. In the first three opening tracks alone there are two songs which rival Felice classics like "Roll on Arte" and "The Boy from Lawrence Country". The opener "Bird on Broken wing" starts with a dog barking whose scale is probably higher than Ian Felice's wonderful guttural voice. It is a woozy old song with a chorus to sing at the top of your voice following a week's quota of alcohol units partaken in an evening and it signals a startling return to form. Even better is "Meadow of Dream" known at their concerts as "Butch Cassidy". It is great lament with the band doing that tight/loose backdrop at which they are past masters and Ian Felice singing "I heard that long factory whistle blow/I did my dishes then I threw them out the window/Give me the good old box car by the sea/With the birds and the bats the bees and the cats and me".

An album packed full of gorgeous melodies and imagery. The diversity on this album is extraordinary - from the quietly uplifting Bird on Broken Wing to the roaring Woman Next Door - and the effortlessness with which the band perform these songs and pepper them with subtleties make this an absolute keeper. Despite what other reviews may claim, this is not a return to the band's "rootsy Americana" - the band has never sounded like this before. The Felice Brothers continue to be one of the most exciting and endlessly talented bands out there.

There seems to be two camps here those who liked "Celebration" and those who hate it. I have to say this is a return to form for the Felice Brothers. I was a little worried after Celebration. I did purchase "God Bless You Amigo" which was a great album in parts but I was worried if I'd ever see the Felice Brothers get the magic back on an album which they had with "Tonight in Arizona" or "Yonder is the Clock".

Fear not this is a great album from start to finish. Back to their roots with a powerful album. Standout tracks for me are "Cherry Licorice", "Meadow Of A Dream", "Lion" and "Hawthorne"

Looking forward to seeing them again live later this month.

in my view this finds the Brothers back on form after the glitch of Celebration Florida. It's almost as if Simone Felice had returned to the family and told them to get themselves back to the woods and dig out those old instruments again and leave the modern technology back in the studio.
Cherry Liquorish was the taster track and after many listens it remains my favourite, slightly ramshackle but a good singalong and an excuse to turn up the volume.
One of my top albums of 2014.

Considering I would give all their previous albums 5 stars (esp. Celebration Florida) I am a little disappointed with Favorite Waitress ... but it's more than worth buying for Constituents alone which matches their very best work.
