Product Description

Hard-hitting documentary about Anderson Sa, a local musician who rallied his violent and corrupt Rio de Janeiro shantytown community to fight back against drug gangs and corrupt police, through a series of music festivals and performances. But at the height of his new movement's success, a tragic accident threatens to undo all of his hard work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Gruesome and Incredible Music 8 Jun 2006
Format:DVD
This film is set in one of the hundreds of favelas in Rio. It tells the story of one of the inhabitants Anderson Sa. Crime and drug dealing make his favela an unpleasant place for the majority of law abiding citizens who work hard to barely scrape a living. Anderson was once a drug dealer who realises that his life expectancy will be limited if he continues in this line of work. The turning point comes when there is a particularly bloody slaughter of innocent citizens at the hands of the police who have little regard for their status. Police corruption is rife. Anderson then embarks on a new existance, encouraging others involved at the bottom line of the drugs trade to extract themselves from this lifestyle and put their time and energies into music projects and arts groups. There is a particularly telling scene when he tries to encourage a young boy from going into the drugs trade. The music throughout the film is sensational and makes you want to get up and dance. This is a very humbling yet empowering piece of work which makes one question one's own life and priorities. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who loves latin beats and african drums and who has any interest in community projects. We can all learn a lot from this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificet positive about hope in favelas 7 Mar 2007
Format:DVD
This documentary is great, you can see how just only one person can make a difference. That everything is in your mind. How many people say, Oh! I can not do this or that! I am just one person! if you are one of these, WATCH THIS FILM!!!! Even in the worst place that you can live your mind can make a difference. I am glad to have watched this film so full of hope, sometimes we have to reache the bottom to gain impulse. Maybe we live a life so comfortable that we have lost the power to fight and make a difference in our own community, life is to easy here and we become dull. I think thaks for the troubles of the life people become who they are and we have to learn a lot about them. WATCH IT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO REGREAT IT.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, not amazing 30 Nov 2009

This is a perfectly reasonable documentary about life in the Favella. There are few insights into the realites of life though, and the program lacks any sort of structure. I would like to have known more about the AfroReggae group that the film focuses on. Instead we get a biography of one of the founders, I found his story got in the way of what could have been a great documentary.

Perfectly good and watchable but I will not be revisiting over and over like many other titles.
