Product Description

Faust calls itself "A Tragedy" right enough, but it might just as well be described as a musical comedy -- it's ripe with comic passages, features many songs, and lacks a tragic ending. And Faust isn't a classic tragic figure, either. In fact, his characteristic yearning for experience and knowledge created a type for the romantic age still known as the Faustian hero. The villain of the piece -- Mephistopheles -- is one of the most likeable characters in the play. His yearnings draw him toward the heavens, yet he is also powerfully attracted to the physical world. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

About the Author

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (28 August 1749 - 22 March 1832) was a German writer and according to George Eliot, "Germany's greatest man of letters... and the last true polymath to walk the earth." Goethe's works span the fields of poetry, drama, literature, theology, humanism and science. Goethe's magnum opus, lauded as one of the peaks of world literature, is the two-part drama Faust. Goethe's other well-known literary works include his numerous poems, the Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and the epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

very nice version of Faust 23 Jan 2009
By Dr. H. C. Vogler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is ... I guess... very famous! But this copy is nice because it is printed in a good font size and style that makes it very easy to read. You can tell that the publisher did not try to save pages. Which by the way seems to be a commen thing across all Classic Books Publishing books. Very nice!

BE CAREFUL 21 Sep 2009

Yes, this is a very nice (and expensive) copy of Faust. However, it only contains Part I of the work. I was under the mistaken impression that it also contained Part II. Don't make the same mistake that I did!
