Hold the dynamics! 23 July 2009

This is a beautiful CD and begins with the gentle, yet powerful Requiem, Op. 48. However, the second track, which is just the baritone singing, is extremely quiet. I had to turn the volume right up. On track 3, when the rest of the chorus come in, the volume is okay again. By track 6 the music is too loud. The dynamics need sorting out. Despite this, the music is achingly beautiful and expertly performed. The Elegie, Op. 24 is matchless. And Apres un Reve, Op. 7 no. 1, is heartrending. Dolly, Op. 56 is very elegant. It sounds slightly English - Elgar-like.

Other reviews have drawn attention to the strange dynamics on this disc. At normal volumes, the choir is inaudible. When you turn up to hear them, your ears are taken off by the orchestra's arrival. When you cna hear the choir the performance is very good indeed. unfortunately, having to turn the volume up, down, up, down, is too much of a distraction. Sadly, I recommend you buy another edition.

This CD does not include Lyrics/translation of any of tracks. Leaflet explains some brief (informative though) backgrounds only.
I would love to understand what they were singing, and was disappointed.

An absolutely stunning piece of music

I am going to have Pavane op 50 as the bridal procession piece of music for my wedding this July. I first heard this piece in a film and it triggered my imagination. Wonderful.

This is the best of ALL THE REQUIEMS.

Fact.
