I was knocked out by this movie. I only heard about it because I was looking for Badly Drawn Boy's latest release. His soundtrack for About a Boy helped sell me on that movie and hooked me into his music. Besides a great soundtrack, the movie was just superb. Timothy Spall is a very good actor, but my favorite part is the way the character of Amy was written and acted. On the surface, she could be just another troubled, worthless teen (bad choices, living with an abuser, pregnant, having to do community service, which means she got into trouble). But she is a very hard and dedicated worker, a kind person and a means of redemption. She, more than anyone else in the movie, shows you can't just someone by outside appearances, and I loved the movie for presenting a character like this. It is also a movie with humor, without making fun of obese people (although it isn't kind towards priests). IMDB has some negative reviews, but this was just a great movie.
