Product Description

CD Description

* Few artists can fuse genres as effortlessly as Linda Lewis. Along with her incredible 5 octave vocal range, Linda Lewis was able to integrate a host of different musical elements into her recordings. Folk, Soul, Pop and Rock were all incorporated helping Linda to create one of the most unique sounds to ever come out of the UK, releasing seven albums during the 1970's.

* Following on from her 1972 album Lark, Linda released FATHOMS DEEP. The album not only consolidated her status as one of Britain's most promising young singers but also evidenced her singularity as a recording artist.

* FATHOMS DEEP features `Red Light Ladies', a Lewis classic that she continues to perform live today Also included are the album's single release `Play Around', and the funky Marvin Gaye-esque soul of `On The Stage,' and the whimsical `Moles.' This release also features the non-album single `Sideway Shuffle' and it's B-side `Safe And Sound' as well as an acoustic demo version of `Red Light Ladies.'

* Along with her solo successes, Linda Lewis also collaborated and toured with many of the worlds most successful artists such as Luther Vandross, Rod Stewart, David Bowie and Jamiroquai and most recently, Noel Gallagher,

* This expanded remaster of FATHOMS DEEP marks BBR's 100th release and is released in a deluxe Super Jewel case with exclusive interviews with Linda Lewis and Jim Cregan.

5.0 out of 5 stars released at last 10 Oct 2008
Format:Audio CD
at last this cracking little album is available on CD. This is Linda's best work - less poppy than other better known stuff.

Linda never got the recogntion she deserved in the 70's Her songwriting is
distinctive and her voice is amazing.

Heartily recommended !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice album... 20 Sep 2012
By R. NEIL
Format:Audio CD
Very much a product of 1973. As I mentioned on my review of Not A Little Girl Anymore, I'm a fan of John Martyn's music of the time. This album has a similar feel in places, thanks to the Vibraphone and Danny Thompson's wonderful bass, but is more diverse than JM's output, and of course the two artists do not really deserve comparison.

Other reviews of Linda Lewis CDs talk about quirky lyrics. They are a little twee in places but that's part of the charm of this disc. An album is the sum of the parts however and I really like the songs, playing and production.

Interestingly the track order is not the same as the product listing and also not the same as the original LP. The booklet notes explain that the opening track on side two of the LP (Play Around) was not intended for the record originally so it is moved down the order of the cd - the ordering done by Linda herself as part of the re-visit to the material. For me the order works either way - and that's as someone who has only recently (early 2012) heard the record for the first time. If you are a vinyl junkie however I can't see that the original LP order can be beaten - side one opening with the title track which is actually quite prog-rockish. The first side finishes with Kingman Tinman which again could keep prog rockers happy and I reckon could have even inspired Kate Bush. Side one closes with the lovely intertwined guitar and piano play of 'Lullabye'.

Then after a natural break as you flip the disc, kicking off again with the energy of 'Play Around'.

The bonus tracks are the last three listed. My favourite of these is 'Safe and Sound' which fits so well and lifts the cd to near perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Magic 10 Mar 2011
By Socotronic - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I bought this record in 1973 when it came out... listened to it endlessly. It has a truly unique quality to it.... a deft, airy, yet earthy blend of folk, funk, world music and jazz. The stereo Fender Rhodes tinkles throughout in an enchanting way....
the album is chock full of the top players in London at that time... members of Jeff Beck's band, Family, the legendary Danny Thompson, and so on... all brilliant musicians serving Lewis's charming, quirky, lyrically arresting songs.
And guess what? It sounds every bit as fresh today as it did then. Treat yourself... I was thrilled to see it finally out on CD!!!! (oh, and lovely strings by the great Del Newman)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great treatment of an incredible album 5 Dec 2012
By Matthew Chinquee - Published on Amazon.com

i was very happy to learn that this album was given a remastered treatment. I first heard this on a previous release, which sounded like it was recorded off a vinyl copy. The difference between that, and this new release is like night and day, and I encourage any Linda Lewis fan to pick this up. The liner notes are great, including images, descriptions of each song, and insights from Lewis herself on her songwriting and recording sessions. I think that the demo of "Red Light Ladies" itself is worth the price of the disc. This is an incredibly flawless album, by an underrated artist (I'm an American) and I hope that her music continues to touch future generations of listeners.
5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection. 2 Nov 2013

One of the few practically perfect albums that I own. Linda's voice, the arrangements, the melodies, the lyrics. Truly perfect.
