Like 'em or not, Harkit has continued to release hard to find scores which, okay, are vinyl transfers but so what? Many independants have had to do the same thing and trust me Harkit's sound quality is better than most. Truth is if it weren't for Harkit, John Barry's 'Boom' would have remained unreleased.
For too long now, Johnny Dankworth's work in TV & Film has remained out of print. Just recently a CD double retrospective of this work 'Let's Slip Away' was released by Eclipse (see my review) and although a bonanza of rarities left out many scores like the spy spoof 'Fathom' starring Raquel Welch and a white bikini designed by VOG of Paris. At times Fathom closely resembles Dankworth's Pop Art masterpiece (spy spoof) 'Modesty Blaise' (also released by Harkit) but is considerably less inventive and not as fabulously camp. Fathom, for my ears, is, in places, a tad too Ray Coniff or Henry Mancini with Singers but there is no denying the loveliness of the main theme whose refrain appears time and again throughout it's short 32 minutes of playing time. Highlights include the rather beautiful 'Jump To The Villa', the splendidly groovy 'Chorale to a Scuba Diver' and the genuinely exciting 'Bullring'. Anyone else think 'Tango Sinister' sounds like the theme from 'The Godfather'?
As I said sound is better than one might expect from a vinyl transfer, the sleeve notes are excellent and include some good shots of Raquel. What I wonder is coming next from Harkit?
