Product Description

Is there really a spy in Garmouth? Too many Allied ships have been sunk by German U-boats, and why else would there be a radio transmitter floating down the river? Jack's search for the spy begins almost as a game. The author also wrote "Rachel and the Angel", "The Wind Eye" and "Yaxley's Cat".

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read and a terrific sequel to Machine Gunners., 21 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Fathom Five (Piper) (Mass Market Paperback)
Having read and enjoyed Machine Gunners it was great to catch up with Chas McGill and friends again. This story was as good as before, if not better. The action kept us reading well beyond the "one last page" I kept threatening (I was reading it to my son) and we found the whole family listening to it in the end!

Chas and his best mate, Cem come across some interesting rubbish on the beach and end up suspecting a spy to be at work in Garmouth. They get into all sorts of scrapes and involve many other people in their hunt for the spy and the truth. It will keep you guessing on many issues, is there a spy? Who might he or she be? Will Chas find the answers and save the ships at sea?

Robert Westall has managed to put together another wonderful story of life during World War Two, as a young boy would have seen it. He admits that it is, in parts, almost an autobiography. If only he were alive today we would be writing to thank him for a brilliant story - we will be working our way through his other books.

Having tried to obtain this book through normal channels ie bookshops and libraries without any luck. It was suggested I try Amazon. Being new to the internet I was a little apprehensive, but my first time experience was very gratifying, the book being purchased without any difficulty. Receipt of the book was amazingly quick and the condition of the book superb.
Result one very happy grand-daughter.
I will definitely use Amazon again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good Robert Westall story., 7 Feb 2010
By England's own. "RGK" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Fathom Five (Piper) (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed the Machine-Gunners and I enjoyed this sequel - Fathom Five. I realize these are supposed to be children's books but that is not to say readers interested in WW11 would not find them good reading. I own several of Robert Westall's books. The only one I didn't, "get" was The Scarecrows. My #1 favourite (English spelling) of his is still Blitz Cat. I LOVE that book.
