This film is not great but it is worth a watch, my only warning is that you should watch it before reading the book (which is infinitely much better).

I don't quite understand what went wrong when this made for TV film was made as the casting of Rutger Hauer and Miranda Richardson as Zavi and Charlie (Charlotte) was spot on, yet halfway through the film the plot changes from that in the book, ultimately ruining what could have been a brilliant film.

With any luck another, more accurate, version of the book will be filmed in the near future, although who to cast will pose some problems...

There are so few movies made about what happend if..? This stands out from other crime thriller movies because of the subject matter, the outstanding performances, visual effects and the ending!

Rutger hauer plays his socks off for this one. Michael Kitchen, Miranda Richardson, Peter Vaughn, John Shrapnel all give great performances. Must it be difficult for a Dutchman to play a Nazi? Well, it didn't show. The most chilling part was the performance of Jean Marsh and the way she described how " they all went up in smoke", Fantastically cold and chilling.

Speer was a brilliant Architect, just on the wrong side! The clever use of visuals to provide the viewer with a glimpes of the Berlin of the near future was realistic. "Reich Tourism" a real well oiled properganda machine, all great moments.

The talk between Xavie and his son on the sick children and the angel and watch repair man just fantastic.

For those who need to be reminded why my Grandad and his generation fought against the Nazies look no further than to delve into a shockingly real alternative world of what happend if...

Truly atrocious 19 Jun 2010

I've just finished watching this... and wish I hadn't.

I'm a great fan of Robert Harris's book Fatherlandand only recently discovered a film adaptation had been made. Since it was a TV film I wasn't expecting a masterpiece but nothing could prepare me for just how atrocious this was.

It was obviously made on a cheap budget and the casting just doesn't work. I like both Rutger Hauer and Miranda Richardson but neither of them convinced in their respective roles as March and Charlie. But the biggest travesty is what's been done to the story. It follows the novel closely enough for the first 30 mins or so... then goes off at a complete tangent (for no obvious reason; certainly not to improve the narrative). And what is that ending with March on a pushbike? It would be comical if it wasn't so bad. I could go on (and on) but I've wasted enough time on this already.

I feel totally sullied by watching this and would strongly recommend any fans of the book to AVOID!
