Despite the ante-natal classes I still picked up this book each night before the birth of our daughter and each night for weeks after for reference.
It is written for fathers but with respect for their partners as well. Our first child has been a rapid learning experience to say the least but this book continues to be useful even if just to see what milestones we are about to look forward to!

This title will be welcomed by new and expectant dads because, let's be honest, there is a serious shortage of books for parents who also happen to be blokes. Sure, there are plenty of excellent general parenting books out there, but the questions that a lot of soon-to-be dads have about the highs and lows that are to follow are largely unaddressed in them.
The book covers planning a family right through to what to expect as your child approaches the age of three via, among a great many others of course, pregnancy, labour, childbirth and those exciting but frankly terrifying and knackering first few days. One of the things I particularly liked about the book is that all of the scary stuff is in there and is dealt with in a reassuring way - I, for one, would definitely have benefitted from the advice on its pages when we were expecting our son.
It's accessible, informative and authoritative, something one or two of the books I consulted a year or so ago could learn from. All in all, this is a comprehensive, down-to-earth offering.

Written in a format which means you can pick it up and put it down as and when you need a bit of information or advice, `Fatherhood' also has the added benefit of every now and then being a bit cheeky (especially when you read about breastfeeding, on page 35), which helps steer it away from being a crumbly old text book. Instead, it's a book about being a dad, written by a dad, who's been there before and knows exactly what to talk about to help you through the first three years of your baby's life.
Each section (of which there are 8, starting at `Planning a Family' and finishing with `Financial Help and Legal Entitlements') is neatly broken up under various headings, which means you can quickly find what you're after. Even handier, each section ends with a `Summing Up' page, which allows us men to cut to the main points when our primitive brains can't cope with paragraphs.
To sum up, then (hurrah for the seamless link), `Fatherhood: The Essential Guide' is a great reference book for new and experienced dads, and it is obvious that a lot of research has gone into this book.
