Amazon.co.uk Review

Among the five episodes collected here are two of Father Ted's finest half-hours. "Rock-A-Hula Ted" was one of the few episodes in which the writers of the show abandoned any concern for their largely British audience and stacked the script with explicitly Irish references: Craggy Island's "Lovely Girls" festival is a burlesque of the all-too-genuine "Rose Of Tralee" pageant, and fire-breathing pop singer Niamh Connolly--played with aplomb by Clare Grogan--an obvious enough Sinead O'Connor manqué.

"New Jack City", meanwhile is the classic episode in which the choleric Father Jack is finally despatched to an old folks' loony bin only to be replaced by the mesmerisingly appalling ragga-fixated chain-smoker Father Fintan Stack. As one of the high points of the Father Ted series this episode is also one of the high points of television comedy. There isn't much wrong with the other three episodes here, either.

On the DVD: an interactive menu allows the selection of individual episodes, and segments within those episodes. The only extra feature is the option of watching the episodes with the dialogue replaced with a commentary by co-writer Graham Linehan and actor Ardal O'Hanlon, who plays Father Dougal Maguire. Occasionally interesting and revealing though this is, it gets rapidly wearing in this form, and would have worked much better if transcribed in an accompanying booklet. The disc is presented in 4:3 aspect ratio with English subtitles available.--Andrew Mueller

The lives of three calamatous preists are resumed in series 2 with more laughs than before. This is truly the best comedy of the 90s and it still works every time. All ages will find many different levels of humour in each episode as the priests' activities become even more bizarre. This is great British comedy that is of far superior quality to the mid-90s American alternatives such as 'Friends'. The conversion to DVD is of excellent quality for hours of enjoyment over and over again. You may find yourself making strange comments to friends and strangers alike, 'Drink', 'Ah go-on, ye will, ye will'. Along with 'Oh right yes', buy this DVD.

What can i say about Father Ted that hasnt already been said it is insightful, inspiring, realistic and FECKIN MARVELOUS! As coming from Ireland myself I think that this show is the best of the buisiness and anyone who loves comedy should buy this because after all there were only 3 seasons and each of them is funny as the other!
I know i`ve seen the re runs on channel 4 but i just cant get enough of it the script is amazing and the comedy timing is suberb.

great comedy 12 Jan 2011

A great comedy series set on fictitious Craggy Island. This second part of the second series focuses on the stressed life of Father Ted Crilly. He is more interested in the likes of fame and wealth than any spiritual things. And he dreams of a better situation than he is in.
Ted is good natured but his patience is always being tested by young assistant the enthusiastic and rather thick Father Dougal McGuire. He is always taking things literally and this leads to disastrous consequences. Also in the house is the bad mouthed Father Jack Hackett who is an angry, wheelchair bound, alcoholic and crazed senior priest.
It would seem that the trio have all been exiled to this bleak island by the church they serve. Possibly because supposedly Ted embezzled charity money, Dougal has supposedly done something with some nuns, and Jack may have been involved in some sort of wedding ceremony outrage.
Also there is the comic character interest of their housekeeper Mrs Doyle who is always insisting they have a cup of tea and the occasional visit from Father Stone and Father Noel Furlong.
The series has a slight comic dig at the church and there is plenty of slapstick comedy. And generally speaking this is a classic and very original comedy.

Fantastic
Father Ted is one of the best things on TV. Poking fun at Ireland, religion and general life, its surreal comedy is fantastically hilarious and refreshing.
