From Amazon.co.uk

Father Ted is one of those rare sitcoms that defies categorisation--it owes as much to Flann O'Brien and Samuel Beckett as it does to Monty Python--and its blend of satire, character comedy and anarchic surrealism has made it a cult favourite around the world. Exiled to remote Craggy Island, Father Ted shares a house with the breathtakingly stupid Father Dougal Maguire and the constantly inebriated Father Jack, who has a small vocabulary and a taste for furniture polish. Their housekeeper, Mrs Doyle, takes care of them with a never-ending supply of tea and sandwiches: "Go on now, Father, won't you try one? They're diagonal." Together they fight boredom by dressing up as Elvis, startling ducks at the fair and provoking nuns. This set compiles the entire three-year series. --Simon Leake

Product Description

The entire 3 series of the cult favourite Channel 4 sitcom which centres on a house of three Catholic priests (Fathers Ted, Dougal and Jack), situated on a remote Irish island. In 'Good Luck, Father Ted', Ted has a chance of appearing on television but is thwarted by Dougal, Jack and the arrival of the worst fair in the world. In 'Entertaining Father Stone', Ted decides that he has had enough of Father Stone's visits to Craggy Island, but a bolt of lightning changes his mind. Whilst in 'The Passion of St Tibulus', Ted and Dougal demonstrate outside the local cinema that is showing a film banned by the Pope, but the film becomes more successful despite their protestations. The priests do their 'Three Stages of Elvis' act in the All Priests Look-a-Like Competition in 'Competition Time', while in 'And God Created Woman', Ted finds his vows of celibacy tested by the arrival on Craggy Island of a steamy authoress. Whilst in 'Grant Unto Him Eternal Rest', Jack consumes too much floor polish and leaves Ted and Dougal half a million pounds in his will, but he may not stay dead long enough for them to collect. In 'Hell', the Fathers' annual holiday looks to be heading for disaster with the arrival of a suspicious couple, an over-excitable youth group and plenty of rain. In 'Think Fast Father Ted', Ted damages the first prize (a new car) in the church raffle and must come up with a plan. In 'Tentacles of Doom', Ted is desperate to keep Dougal and Jack under control when the Bishop comes to Craggy Island to upgrade the Holy Stone of Clonrichert to a class II relic. You will enjoy it. Oh, you will, you will, you will... In 'The Old Grey Whistle Theft', a rebellious young priest arrives on the island and threatens to bring about the breakdown of law and order. In 'A Song For Europe', Ted decides to enter the Song For Europe 'borrowing' an old unknown song for his entry. In 'The Plague', the Bishop (who has an intense phobia of rabbits) comes to visit just as Dougal gets a new pet. In the grand old sitcom tradition, the pet just happens to be a rabbit. In 'Are You Right There, Father Ted' Ted's transfer from Craggy Island does not last as long as he'd hoped for, and upon his return he finds that a few changes have taken place. 'Chirpy Burpy Cheap Sheep' sees Ted uncovering a foul conspiracy at the Annual Sheep Competition. 'Speed 3' has Dougal's life placed at risk by vengeful playboy milkman Pat Mustard. In 'The Mainland' Mrs Doyle and Father Jack show Ted up on a trip to the mainland. 'Escape from Victory' sees the old rivalry between Ted and Father Dick Byrne revived when Craggy Island take on Rugged Island in the All-Priests Over-75's Five-a-Side Football Challenge Match. 'Kicking Bishop Brennan Up the Arse' has Ted try to gather the courage to carry out a terrifying dare. 'Night of the Nearly Dead' finds the parochial house under seige by zombified housekeepers when woolly-jumpered television heart-throb Eoin McLove comes to tea with Mrs Doyle. Finally, in 'Going to America', Ted sees a chance of escape from Craggy Island when he is offered a job in America. Sadly, star Dermot Morgan died shortly after filming of the series was completed, but the decision had already been made to end the show while it was at its peak.

This boxed set comprise 4 DVDs covering series 1 (6 episodes), 2-prt 1 (5 episodes + A Christmassy Ted special), 2-prt 2 (5 episodes) and 3 (8 episodes), including specials and bonus material; over 10 hours total playing time and a garranteed future comedy classic.

The series revolves around the adventures of three eccentric Catholic priests and a housekeeper on a remote, God-forsaken, rocky island located off the western coast Ireland called Craggy Island.

Father Ted Crilly, Father Dougal McGuire and Father Jack Hackett are looked after by Mrs Doyle, the hardworking lynchpin and housekeeper of the Parochial House where the quartet live.

Father Ted dreams of a parish in Las Vegas; Father Dougal has trouble distinguishing dreams from reality; Father Jack is a perpetual drunk and leacher, and Mrs Doyle has a fixation for tea-making and DIY.

Their unbelievable and hilarious exploits bring them into contact with the other crazy inhabitants of the island and often into frequent conflict with their Bishop who would prefer to see them all go to Hell, if only he could arrange it.

Father Ted takes an irreverent but very funny look at religion in the much the same way as 'All Gas and Gaitors' and 'Oh Brother' did several decades before.

A must-have DVD set for any serious collector of comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars God Bless Father Ted!! Excellent!! 3 Feb 2005

This definitely has to be one of the best sit coms of all time. Featuring the long-suffering Father Ted, the hapless Father Dougal Maguire, Father Jack Hacket, who likes the odd drink and good old housekeeper Mrs Doyle, who seems to do everything from tea making to roof repairs.

Together they all live in the parochial house on the godforsaken island of Craggy Island, a place populated by many eccentrics where the only place of interest is 'The Holy Stone of Clonrichert' basically a stone on a pedestal.

The box set contains 4 disks
Disk 1: The 6 episode from series 1
Disk 2: 5 episodes from series 2 and 'A Christmassy Ted'
Disk 3: Contains the remaining 5 episodes of series 2
Disk 4: All 8 episodes from series 3.

Each episode is a mixture of side splitting comedy and slapstick humour following the clergy through various improbable and farcical situations. They are kept in check by the hard line Bishop Len Brennan, and occasionally come into competition with the residence of the Rugged Island parochial house Father Dick Burn et al.

The humour is light hearted, timeless, original, classic and just pure brilliance, poking fun at irish rural life, priests, the Catholic church and Catholicism in general.

This was a hugely successful series and I think the 3rd series is the best of the lot. This is definitely a box set worth owning, brilliant!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE MY BRICK! 12 Dec 2006
By Celtise
Love or hate religion...you'll love this....a true classic. This show about 3 priest and their tea-maniac housekeeper living on a tiny island is histerically funny and could have gone on for years had Dermot Morgan(Father Ted) not tragically passed away. Now nearly ten years later, i'm still as mad as ever about this show and still burst out laughing when i see Ardal O'Hanlon as Fr Dougal. Th catchphrases are the most memorable aspect of the show.....who'll ever forget them....my all-time favourite has to be "I LOVE MY BRICK" which was uttered by fr jack in "The New Milkman" episode. I just got round to getting this recently and i've been watching it non-stop since. It should be part of everyones collection so buy it! Its irish humour at its best(though it was produced by an english channel but we won't get into that). Also a few famous faces are in this, namely Graham Norton(Legend) and Pauline McGlynn as Mrs ***** Doyle!
