Much better than the remake!, 2 Mar 2009
This is a sweet, funny film that should be more readily available. The American remake did not do it any justice - somehow it is extremely amusing in French but just doesn't cut it in English.
GD is as always very funny, very restrained, hysterical facial expressions... it's sweet how he tries his best to back up his daughter's outrageous stories.
After all is said and done it's about the relationship between father and daughter more than her and the guy she falls for, and all the better for it. Watch it!

This review is from: My Father The Hero (aka Mon Pere Ce Heros) (French with subtitles) [VHS] [1992] (VHS Tape)

Great film but poor transfer, 25 Nov 2007
Ignore the Amazon synopsis; it refers to the wrong film, but that may be ironed out by the time you read this!
I won't review the film because those who reviewed the VHS version have done that well, except to say that I agree that it's a lovely film; funny and touching.
If you are thinking of upgrading to the DVD version, don't bother, unless you've worn it out. The transfer is one of the worst I've seen. The sloppy work is shown by the following:
Sound is ordinary and still makes it very difficult to follow the French.
No proper anamorphic widescreen (you have to fill the screen manually to 16:9 , thus losing the definition and saturation.)
Colour is wishy-washy.
Picture is grainy.
Blacks aren't black enough
Subtitles are on at all times and can't be turned off
No audio options
No scene selection
No extras
To be honest I think my VHS version is better and how the production company can manage to release a DVD of inferior quality is quite remarkable. A totally rushed job and possibly a direct VHS transfer.
The film deserves 4 stars and some people will love it so much they will give it 5, but due to the quality of this version I've dropped a star.
You've been warned.
