Review

'FATHER FRANK is a warm, funny, blisteringly good read that has the angels on its side' (Tony Parsons )

'A dazzling first novel - funny, thoughtful and original' (Stephen Fry )

'Refreshing' (Adele Parks )

'A light-hearted comic novel with the feel-good factor of an Ealing comedy, and some cracking one-liners' (Greg Eden, Bertrams in The Bookseller )

'The only novel I've ever read that tackles the fundamental issues of God, Irishness, advertising, love and cab driving all at once. Fast-moving, witty and highly digestible, it slips down like a fresh Eucharist wafer' (Tim Lott )

‘Original and comedic…very cool, very pithy’ (Express )

'Warm, tender, funny and engaging from start to finish. It’s full of sharply-written dialogue, filled with characters you can take to your heart, and driven by a classic will they/won’t they narrative' (Scotsman )

Adele Parks

I heard Paul Burke on the radio and found he was the copywriter that wrote the Budweiser frogs,Mastercard and Kit Kat adverts. This being his debut novel I thought his writing had to be good and the storyline original. I was not disappointed,it is a hugely enjoyable read with something to amuse or make you think on every page. He approaches the Catholic religion with real insight and humour without piling on the agony and probably because he is already a well establihed copywriter he writes with discipline and clarity there is no rambling on or old material. It especially appealed to me having been brought up a catholic, but non-catholic friends who have bought it rate it as highly as I do, as there is so much in it. He is definely an author to watch out for in the future.

This is one of the few books I've returned to again after reading it. Each time I find something else which hits a nerve or strikes a chord. A very clever book which I recommend to everyone and anyone who is interested in the real Catholic way of doing things. My only regret is that I can't find any other books by Mr Burke.

Anyone who was bought up in a Catholic environment will savour every word in this brilliant book. Paul Burke managed to capture the whole London-Irish scene with razor sharp accuracy, snappy wit and touching observations. It's the story of a man's choice of career and the way he influences, and is influenced by, those around him. I found myself laughing out loud and then wincing with pain, all in one chapter! I haven't enjoyed reading as much as this for years.

Good Service
As a lapsed Catholic brought up in 'The Faith' I found the book very funny. I am not sure if you have not had the early indoctrination if you would find it quite as good. Read more

Totally disagree
I'm afraid I thought this was unfunny rubbish. Some of the supposed funny bits were reprised and hackneyed old jokes. Read more

Yet again, a book that has been sitting on my shelf for around 3 years that I absolutely adored - why do I do that? Why do I let these books linger unread for so long? Read more

God has a sense of humour!!
This is a hilarious novel about a young lad who enters the priesthood by default. Father Frank himself is flawed, very human in every sense of the word and very clever. Read more

just loved it
I thoroughly enjoyed both of Paul Burke's books. The characters were so sweet and lovable, I wanted them to be real so that I could have them as friends. Read more

A remarkable first novel
This book is laugh-out-loud funny, but also incredibly poinient and heartwarming. I fell in love with Frank Dempsey and his accidental journey into the priesthood. Read more

Wonderfully original
How nice to read something full of warm human spirit and generosity, tempered with mankind's ability to judge and still be a tad bitchy on times! Read more

Fun lad fic
A funny and entertaining take on the boy meets girl theme - one where for once it is not guaranteed that the boy will get the girl, as he's a priest. Driving a cab. Read more
