Chesterton at his best,
By A Customer
This review is from: Father Brown - The Hammer Of God And Other Stories [DVD] (DVD)
Father Brown is always a delight to watch, his wit is always worth watching but it is also amusing. The current forensic advances would help some of the useless policemen in one of the stories but we have to remember this isn't set in current times! This isn't as deep as some of his other works but the underlying messsage is still there. GK Chesterton is always a delight but these stories bring him very much to life - well worth watching.

This is the first of three boxed sets. I have just bought all three new for a fiver each. I had put off the purchace because they were so extremely expensive.Kenneth Moore was a strange choice for Father Brown but he is surprisingly good most of the time. The stories are excellent as you would expect from such an outstanding writer as G. K. Chesterton. Unlike most dectectives Brown operates alone, witty and insightful he never shows his hand to the last moment. This is a budget production which isn't much of a problem as the stories aren't very demanding in that respect. The casting of Flambeau was more of a let down. Is it asking to much to find an actor who can affect some kind of French accent? All the other performances were respectable enough. I would recommend this series to any adult interested in the detective genre. Whilst there is nothing offensive in it, the stories were written for adults so it isn't particularly suitable for children. If the TV series is too expensive for you, Amazon is selling a paperback of all the Father Brown stories for just £2. Now that's a bargain.

I like the Chesterton stories, but haven't seen any TV renditions of them until this one. Kenneth More does a good job, and the minimalistic staging was standard at the time. A bit unfortunate, though, that the subtitles are only in Dutch. I do not understand Dutch, and could use subtitles in English to grasp the more subtle phasings.Still OK to watch.
