Amazon.co.uk Review

This 1990s update of the Spencer Tracy-Elizabeth Taylor hit is a mix of the pleasant and the silly, a nice enough movie but a little too controlled to become particularly interesting. Steve Martin plays the ageing patriarch who is threatened by his daughter's engagement and not-quite-willing to let her go. The writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers provides Martin's character with a perhaps too-broad range of comic responsiveness to the situation, some of it gentle (a ritual game of basketball between dad and his little girl) and some of it slapstick (Martin sneaking around his prospective in-laws' house and encountering a guard dog). Martin Short turns up as a wedding co-ordinator--which has deliriously delicious possibilities--but his inventiveness doesn't quite strike the chord this time. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars Well observed, and ageing gracefully, 4 Jun 2003
By A Customer
This film is begining to look dated now, but don't let that put you off. It is a well observed ode to fathers, who are so often overlooked in the largely female dominated world of weddings. Although Martin Short manages to steal every scene he's in with a hugely over the top and immensley enjoyable turn as wedding planner with an outrageous accent. It reminds fathers not to get too caught up in the money that is being spent, and reminds us daughters not to sideline our dads.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Caak?, 15 Oct 2000
Father of the Bride is by far the best of Steve Martin's later work, at some points even harking back to his glory days with Carl Reiner (The Jerk, The Man With Two Brains). Father of the Bride is a remake of the 1950s classic with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor but could not be more different. Martin's portrayal of the over-cautious father who is struggling with letting go of his daughter and, as he sees it, giving her to another man is unrepeatable. His descent into almost madness is sheer genius climaxing in the fantastic supermarket scene. Further comedy is injected when Martin Short (Innerspace) turns up as the indecipherable wedding co-ordinator, seemingly intent on spending all of Steve Martin's money! Short and Martin play off each other brilliantly, a fond reminder of Three Amigos, showing the fact that they are both greatly underrated these days. Diane Keaton (The Godfather) is perfect as Martin's wife, the level headed other half to Martin's anxiety-ridden character. The films great asset is that whilst being outrageously funny, it never ceases to be anything but completely realistic, I know people who have watched this and said it was a painful reminder watching Martin behaving as they did under the same situation! Though this should not put you off buying this film, it's a modern classic and no mistake. I gave this film 4 stars though I think the film really deserves 5, I deducted one for the DVD because of the lack of extra features. But the film itself is faultless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bride Blues For Doting Daddy, 14 Mar 2000
By A Customer
If you like sentimental, over-the-top, feel good movies with lots of cute, poignant bits in and pretty people then you'll not be disappointed with this flick as it has all those things in great, shameless, abundance. Set in affluent American suburbia Steve Martin does a marvellous job as George Banks a happy father of two whose life is turned into chaos when his favourite offspring, Annie, announces she's getting hitched at the tender age of twenty-two. To make things worse her husband-to-be is actually nice.

There is some lovely interplay and sweet scenes between father and daughter as he slowly reconciles himself to the fact that she's finally all grown-up and there is good support from the other members of the cast not least from Diane Keaton as Annie's mother whose character is so well-contrasted with Martin's.

I'm loath to admit it but this cutsie-flick did reach my softer side and despite it's flaws it is still an entertaining and truthful film which will strike a chord with everyone who's ever been involved in this situation whether you're the daddy, mummy, bride or bewildered little sibling.

But you do need plenty of sensibility to be able to stomach this otherwise you're likely to lose patience especially when it comes to Martin Short's cameo as the very chic, foreign wedding co-ordinator.
