Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

Everybody important from the first film, including the writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers, regroups for this sequel involving a pair of pregnancies. Steve Martin's patriarch has a crisis when his married daughter (Kimberly Williams) is with child, and an even bigger one when his middle-aged wife (Diane Keaton) announces that another bambino is on the way. Martin Short is more effectively used this time around (he played the wedding co-ordinator in the first film), and while this movie's inevitable climax has both women giving birth on the same chaotic night, the overall effect of the film is less contrived than its predecessor. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet but not as memorable as Part 1 23 Dec 2007
By Jay
Format:DVD
Thankfully it doesn't seem like a total cash-in (like so many sequels of this sort do) because it has a certain charm (as did the first film) and is still remarkably entertaining, all considered. But you can tell it was made solely because of the success of the first film - even Martin Short is back with another extended cameo as Franz the wedding manager. Of course you may be wondering why he's involved with a pregnancy, since his business is weddings. Here's a hint: more $$$ for the studio.

Martin is basically doing the same thing he did in the first film - the weary upper-class guy who feels overwhelmed by the state of things. Diane Keaton is still very sweet and likable as his wife. The rest of the cast (including Macaulay's little brother Kieran Culkin) range from OK to good. Martin Short, however, is yet again a stand-out and is very funny - he wasn't necessary for the plot but he is funny and a good addition to the movie regardless.

Overall I'd say this is one of those sequels that didn't need to be made, but could have been a lot worse. It's sweet, it's got some good lite-comedy moments, and in general it's just an enjoyable family movie that isn't trying to be anything other than simple entertainment -- which it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baby Blues for Grand-Dad George 14 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
The problem with sequels is that they end up copying the pattern of the first and this one is no exception. However, I loved both this film and the original and I actually thought this one was better mainly because more happens.
Having just recovered both emotionally and financially from his daughter's wedding neurotic George Banks is contentedly settling back into his more than comfortable domestic bliss. So you can imagine what a blow the announcement of the conception of his first grand-child is going to do to the poor man and if that's not enough then wait till you hear what his wife has to tell him...
Despite obvious cliches this film still boils over with wit, charm and fun and Martin Short makes a welcome return as the eccentric wedding/nursery co-ordinator.

5.0 out of 5 stars Father of the Bride II 19 May 2003
Format:VHS Tape
Just as funny as Father of the Bride I.
Steve Martin fits well into his 'stereotype' Amercian middle bracket family man.
Diane Keaton - a sweetie.
Supporting actors are better than the main stars.
Superb traditional modern romantic COMEDY to make you chuckle on a 'night spent in'!

5.0 out of 5 stars Steve Martin 22 Jan 2014

Steve Martin's quirky comic style works better in some of the films than others, but here he seems to manage to pull off a good sequel to the original jokey version of the much older black and white film of the same name.

3.0 out of 5 stars And whom may I ask is the father? 27 Dec 2013
Format:DVD
George Banks must accept the reality of what his daughter's ascension from daughter to wife, and now, to mother means when placed into perspective against his own stage of life.

As the family unit starts to unravel in his mind, a rapid progression into mid-life crisis is in his future.

His journey to regain his youth acts as a trigger for a kind of resurrection of his attitude on life when he and his wife find how their lives are about to change as well.....

The first movie was a huge hit, so a sequel was inevitable because at the time, Hollywood had a penchant for greenlighting sequels to sleeper hits. See also, Waynes World, Beethoven, and Sister Act.

And thankfully, along with WW2, this is one of the better blatant cash ins.

If you enjoyed the first movie, you will enjoy this, because Meyers has gone for the old 'If it ain't broke' way of filming, more of the same.

There are references to the first film, The Dogs not liking George, the over emotional Father In Law, and of course Frank, the clown of the movie, used to even better effect than in the first.

It's all been done before, but it's still a nice little film for all the family.

4.0 out of 5 stars Family fun and frivolity
We enjoyed Father of the Bride, so this was a welcome sequel. Steve Martin plays the slightly hapless George Banks and Diane Keaton is brilliant as his long-suffering wife Nina. Read more
