Book Description

5 July 2012

FATE is the story of Lord Francis Damory's quest for the elixir of immortality. Set against the magnificent background of the eighteenth century where science and magic, death and beauty meet in the gilded salons of the decadent nobility and the brothels and debtors' prisons of London, Francis tells of his many love affairs and his deadly duels, his encounters with courtesans and castrati, alchemists and anatomists, Rosicrucians, visionaries, monsters, charlatans, spies and assassins. His travels take him through France, across the Alpine passes to Venice and the pirate-infested Mediterranean Sea to Egypt, Cyprus and distant, exotic Constantinople on the trail of his mysterious ancestor Tobias who might - just possibly - still be alive.

Product Description

Review

'This is very special. It's a family history of a character introduced to us in Farundell, but this completely works as a standalone. An epic historical novel with magic undertones as a man searches across Europe for the elixir of life. It's 18th-century drama full of science, adventure and mystery on a grand scale. Wonderful stuff, highly recommended' (Bookseller )

'Fate is an intricate, Gothic novel in elegant style. Fredericks brilliantly absorbs the detail of eighteenth-century cities, country, clothes, food, theatre, music and architecture. This fast-paced fiction transcends the genre . . . Read Fate: discover its secrets; meets its characters; experience Damory's quest; above all enjoy a deeper sense of what it is to be human' (Historical Novels Review )

'A sensationally engrossing read . . . elegant characters in an eloquently told tale of mystery, magic and timelessness . . . a sublimely enjoyable book that will leave you filled with wonder and thinking about it long after you have closed the cover' (www.bookclubforum.co.uk )

'Brings to live a vivid, exciting portrait of the eighteenth-century world . . . Though undoubtedly an adventure story, Fate unfolds as an intricate, dark treatise on the costs of attaining knowledge and the double-edged sword of eternal life on earth . . . This beautifully written book presents the question of whether a man is truly in charge of his own destiny or whether fate - and the fate of those around him - is determined by forces beyond his control' (www.welovethisbook.com )

'Lord Francis Damory, bit player in Farundell, deserved a volume of his own, and this is it . . . A funny, enthralling prequel . . . It's an action-packed story as many events (and people) happen to him but one accepts they wouldn't be as entertaining recounted by anyone else. This Lord Damory is a kind, generous scientist and polymath, but most of all, Ms Fredericks has blessed him with an excellent sardonic, sarcastic wit and sense of irony' (www.thebookbag.co.uk )

'A story with a whole host of elements that blend together to create a great whole. If you want a love story, you have it, you want adventure, yep that too and if you like something that pushes boundaries bringing historical fiction and fantasy together then you're in for a treat. Add to this some solid prose with a huge cast and all in all it's a standalone that works very well. Back that up with an author who loves to tell a story that brings their own identifiable style and you've got something a little bit special. Great' (www.falcatatimes.blogspot.com )

'Fredericks writes absolutely beautifully . . . You can get completely, wonderfully lost in Fredericks' impeccably imagined lazily unfolding world. This novel is a genuine thing of beauty . . . Science, magic and history all combine seamlessly to make this a novel that really stands out from the crowd. I've not read anything that I could really compare it to, it's utterly unique. Add to this Fredericks' impressive elegance of narrative, and you've got a real winner. A beautiful, beautiful read. Can't recommend it highly enough' (www.fantasybytes.net )

Praise for Farundell, L. R. Fredericks' first novel:

'Farundell is a marvellously dark and intricate literary gothic novel. The style is elegant and engaging and the storyline compelling. This is an author to watch.'

(Joanne Harris, bestselling author of Chocolat )

'A richly ambitious debut novel . . . one cannot help but be swept away by Fredericks' bold intentions' (Financial Times )

'Beautifully written . . . I am sure it will appeal to many people' (Daily Mail )

'Descriptively, conceptually and emotionally captivating' (Easy Living )

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing gothic tale 15 Dec 2012
By Keris Nine TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The gothic qualities of LR Frederick's second novel - the second chronicle of the mystical Damory dynasty that started with the post WWI story Farundell - feel much more at home in the 18th century world of Francis Damory, and it can be read without any previous background required. Fascinated by the heritage of his great-grandfather Tobias Damory, receiving some mystical hints that his ancestor might actually be still alive and even immortal - Francis's investigations on the whereabouts of Tobias and his quest for arcane knowledge takes him on a dark journey through sordid London brothels and debtors prisons to more exotic but no less dangerous locations in Paris, Venice, Egypt and Turkey.

There's evidently a fair amount of adventuring and mysticism in Fate, Francis fighting duels, conducting romances, siring children and battling pirates as well as other less materially substantial threats along the way, but Fredericks writes wonderfully, with verve, character and accuracy for the historical period, or at least for the gothic horror/romance genre. Recognising that the key to this kind of work lies in the ambiguity and romanticism of dark fascination, there's a similar ambiguity at play in the characters and the locations that are visited in Fate, where the most respectable of salons and institutions reveal rather more sordid goings on, and the best of intentions don't seem to be enough to enable one to rise above the darker side of one's nature. The writing revels in this duality of the darker nature that lies beneath the surface, and it flows wonderfully.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fate 6 Sep 2012
By S Riaz HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Having really enjoyed L.R. Fredericks first novel, Farundell, I was intrigued to read this book, which includes some links with the previous characters and places. In fact, the prologue begins with Alice asking her great-great-great-great-grandfather, Lord Francis Peter George St John Damory, for the story of his life. This then is the story of Francis Damory, beginning in London in 1717 in London and taking us through many different places and situations - from charity schools to brothels, from card dens to university, across Europe and into distant lands in search of his own ancestor Tobias. Tobias, he believes, has achieved immortality and much of this imaginative, descriptive and incredibly intricate and weaving storyline, involves Francis searching for his ancestor.

It is difficult to define this novel. If you enjoy books which meander, in which you can lose yourself and which veer suddenly into side stories, then you will love this. It is fair to say that it is not a fast moving novel, one to be savoured rather than rushed. Francis is a wonderful character, flawed but essentially kind, warm and who tries to do the right thing. The author weaves a magical and intricate world around him and I am sure that, if you read this novel, it will stay with you for a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Tale Of Many Roads Travelled 19 Jan 2013
By John Woodcock VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
What first attracted me to Fate was the reference to "Magic" in the byline: Death and Beauty...Magic and Science. However, it was quite soon after starting that I realised that the magic element is by no means the major ingredient. In fact it's science, beauty, or at least the narrator's perception of it, and death that predominate. It's certainly no Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (Heartily recommended, by the way).

Fate is very much a slow burn read. For a good part of the first 100 pages I did wonder when the story was going to get going. Then I realised that actually it had and by that time I was drawn into the main character, Francis Damory's, world.
And it's quite a world. He has a succession of lovers, all of whom he does appear actually to love (although he seems happy enough to take himself off the local brothel at a moment's notice); and a quest of Homeric proportions- including one memorable encounter that even the writer acknowedges is worthy of Odysseus.
Sometimes these travels and encounters are desribed in summary, some covering many years, others in great detail. Many times I would like to have known more about the episodes that were summarised and it is certainly in the more drawn out passages that the book really comes alive.
One slight quibble- a suggestion really, I suppose- There are such an enormous amount of characters referred to and encountered over such a long period within the story that I found myself trying to remember who people were and flipping back quite a few times to remind myself. A dramatis personae would have helped. Although as an appendix, I think, so as not to give things away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved it 19 Oct 2012
By Laura Smith VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I wasn't too sure about this book before I started reading it but have to say I thooroughly enjoyed it. Although you never get deep enough with the main character to really feel like you know him, this works for the story I think. As a lord, he would have to appear aloof and to put up a front. I liked the mystical element of the book too, it wasn't too weird, so it seemed believeable. Lots of sub stories go on within the main story and it is always interesting. I'd be interested in reading the earlier book too.
