When a plane crashes high in the mountains of North Carolina, forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan is called in to identify the victims. A chance discovery concerns her: a severed foot, well away from the main crash site. A deserted house close by is buried so deep in the woods that locals claim to know nothing of its existence. And her examination of the foot throws up more questions than answers. Before she can make any progress Tempe's professional standing is threatened. But she fears that, air tragedy aside, another corpse lies somewhere in the woods. Pitting herself against a conspiracy of silence, Tempe vows to bring justice for her mystery victim.

The plot is initially centred on the site of a plane crash that Brennan is asked to attend, while salvaging remains of the crash site she is dragged into something a lot more sinister and complex than she or the reader could ever imagine. As well as trying to distance herself from the disaster for the sake of the families left behind by the tragedy, she also has to battle against a conspiracy to professionally discredit her.
Her old police ally and love interest Andrew Ryan is back on the scene as many sub plots weave around the main story line. Her cat Birdie also has a rival in the arrival of an orphaned dog, Boyd, a love/hate relationships develops.
The detailed descriptions of the technicalities used to establish the cause of the plane crash and other pathology references may be a little overwhelming, but as ever Tempe's story is gripping to the end.
Reprising Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist, Kathy Reichs presents her fourth riveting thriller. Once again her story is grounded in authenticity which only serves to validate this shocking tale.
When Tempe Brennan hears on her car radio that a plane with 88 passengers is down in the North Carolina mountains, she heads for the scene. That in itself is tragedy enough but missing body parts and cannibalism make Reichs's plot boil.
As Tempe sifts through the grisly debris she comes upon a foot that doesn't seem to belong to any of the dead. She pursues this conundrum only to find herself ousted from her job by a conniving politico who has much to hide. To save herself and her reputation Tempe has a major life endangering mystery to solve.
