A Fatal Verdict

What would you do if someone murdered your child, but the justice system let you down?

Kathryn Walters is faced with this dreadful decision when her daughter, Shelley, is found dead in a bath in her boyfriend’s flat. Despite the best efforts of the Crown Prosecution barrister, Sarah Newby, it seems likely that the boyfriend, David Kidd, will be acquitted. How can her family tolerate this? And how should the investigating detective, Terry Bateson, act when it seems that the murdered girl’s mother is seeking revenge on the man he is certain killed Shelley in the first place?

As the story unravels Sarah Newby is confronted with one of her toughest defence cases yet, with a client who is not only reluctant to give evidence on her own behalf, but also refuses to explain why she chose Sarah to defend her in the first place ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic detective/lawyer /ethical gripper, 10 Aug 2011
This review is from: A Fatal Verdict (The Trials of Sarah Newby) (Kindle Edition)
Gripping (couldnt put it down stuff) with male cop and female lawyer getting stuck into some ethical dilemmas - e.g. does scumbag deserve to die even if jury cant see his evil. Nice setting (York) with good local touches and totally believable family at the centre of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fatal (Verdict) Attraction, 6 Dec 2011

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Fatal Verdict (The Trials of Sarah Newby) (Kindle Edition)
This is the second outing for Sarah Newby. This time, the story centres around the aftermath of the death (suicide or murder?) of Shelley Walters who was found in a bath in her (ex)boyfriend's flat with her wrists slit. Was she murdered and if so, what will her family do in the event that the murderer walks free?

Like the first - a game of proof - this book is full of realistic characters and legal twists and I was absolutely gripped; desperate to know what would happen next, I read it through mealtimes, cut the dog's walk short, and even sent my husband off to the pub so I could finish it off without interruption.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!, 15 Aug 2011
This review is from: A Fatal Verdict (The Trials of Sarah Newby) (Kindle Edition)
This was the second one and it was just as compulsive as the first - when it really takes off in the second half I found myself again staying up into the small hours to find out what would happen. There's a truly terrific revenge murder about two thirds of the way through - a very satisfying end to the bad guy - followed by some surprising and very subtle legal twists at the end. As in the last book, there are strong characters with convincing family backgrounds, who face some fearsomely difficult moral choices, which the justice system - both police and courts - just seem to make worse. Sarah Newby is here prosecuting and defending (at different times) while her own marriage seems to be breaking up, and I HOPED she would get it together with detective Terry Bateson, but ... I won't spoil it for you. Maybe in the next book?
