Product Description

Review

‘When a former pilot with years of experience turns his hand to writing thrillers you can take their authenticity for granted. His writing is exceptional and the dialogue, plots and characters are first-class… far too good to be missed.’
Sunday Mirror

‘Like the thrillers of Tom Clancy, Stephen Coonts and Larry Bond, the novels of Dale Brown brim with action, sophisticated weaponry and political intrigue… first-rate.’
San Francisco Chronicle

‘The best military adventure writer in the country.’

Product Description

State-of-the-art action in the air, on land and at sea as the USA is drawn into conflict with China in this compelling and authentic new tale from an acclaimed master of the modern action-thriller.

Dale Brown’s spectacular new international bestseller – packed with high-action entertainment, cutting-edge technology and breathtaking scenes of aerial combat – looks forward to a near future where Taiwan’s declaration of independence from mainland China brings a very real threat of major conflict to the Pacific.

As China prepares its military response, the US president attempts to avert an international crisis by calling on his own tried and trusted secret strike force. But soon it becomes horribly apparent that with China and the USA moving ever closer to a nuclear showdown, it could be a mission too far for Patrick McLanahan, Brad Elliott, Jon Masters and their high-tech EB-52 Megafortress – the ‘Old Dog’ itself.

The author of the "Old Dog" sagas has brought his genre up to date with modern politics and weaponry including the usual mind bogglingly detailed technical descriptions which bring such a feeling of authenticity to his books. This tale includes old familiar characters in new career settings and set against a background of China setting out to reclaim its former territory in Taiwan and the Old Dog crew being all that stands between them and success.. As usual it is full of action set on the grandest of scales and with a global backdrop. The plot has Dale Brown's usual twists and turns which keep the interest going and which get one wondering how on earth the good guys can possibly get out of this one successfully. What did disappoint however was that tales such as this work only if the suspension of disbelief operates and in this case it does not come off. One can become immersed in the tale and gripped by the characters for as long as there in a vestige of belief that "this could actually happen". In "Fatal Terrain" however the characters ........ good and bad guys ........ act so bizarrely at times that one is brought back to reality with a start on several occasions thinking "wait a moment. that is just too unbelievable." Similarily the plot goes just too far to retain even a vestige of credibility at times. I am always dissatisfied when my mind deserts the plot of a book to begin to protest that "this is just not possible" and this I found to be such a book. So .......... riproaring activity .......... major warfare on a continental scale ....... larger than life charcters.......but the important believability which can keep one rivetted is sadly in this case lacking.

Fatal Terrain 15 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
This was the first Dale Brown book I read, and I don't recommend it for a first read of this author. Although the characters are very well fleshed out, it's hard to like several of them. As a European, I found them very, very, American in philosophy and outlook. If you enjoy war thrillers like Tom Clancy's, you might enjoy this. The battle scenes are very well described, easy to imagine and fairly plausible. But, it's very pro-American, some of the scenes with non-American people are cringe-worthy. The author needs to realise that not everyone loves America. The ending let me down, with a character behaving in an unbelievable way, and was rather abrupt. Not bad for a summer read on the beach, but neither a prize winner.

Fatal Terrain is the latest book from Dale Brown that I read and carries the torch well. The same characters are there from Day of the Cheeta,Sky Masters etc but the plot is consistantly running at a fast paced very very few lulls to get bored in. A First class novel for fans of the rest of the series and first time readers as well
