This review is from: Fatal Quest: Woodend's First Case (Chief Inspector Woodend Mysteries) (Hardcover)
So this is it, is it, the valedictory case for old Charlie Woodend? Or rather it isn't, it's his first case, but for regular readers, it's his last. Here he waves good bye to his friends and colleagues and goes off into retirement. Sally Spencer skilfully weaves the past and present together in a highly entertainin' (sic) read. Well actually the present is still thirty five years ago, so perhaps I should say the "present" is contemporary with the other Woodend novels.
As usual with Spencer's books the reader gets to like the characters and becomes angry on their behalf. The victim is called Pearl and more than most fictitious murder victims has a glittering life ahead of her.
I very much enjoyed this book, although it was tinged with regret as we probably won't be meetin' old Charlie again. Most of the villains get their comeuppance, although not necessarily at the right hands, even Charlie comes close to taking an early bath.
If you enjoy well written and skilfully plotted books, you'll like this one, I've never really understood why Sally Spencer hasn't got at least one Golden Dagger award. Highly recommended!"
