Action film set in Hong Kong's triad gangland. After a drug deal goes wrong and a simple kidnap escalates into murder, one of Hong Kong's most ruthless triad gangs finds itself on the brink of self-destruction: riddled with greed and ambition and relentlessly pursued by enemies on both sides of the law. Leader Boss Lin (Sammo Hung) must now reassert his authority by destroying everyone who stands in his way.

Fatal Move provides plenty of ammunition for those who think they don't make `em like they used to. Even a decade ago you get the feeling that this cops and triads movie could have been a lot better in the hands of any one of dozens of capable Hong Kong directors but it remains a mishmash of half-realised ideas, an impressive cast (many from the infinitely superior SPL) whose potential is largely wasted and the odd action scene that never really catch fire. While there's nothing original here, the ingredients are there for a better film that at times struggles to get out but never makes it, which makes it all the more surprising that writer-director Dennis Law was also the producer of Johnnie To's two much more impressive Election films.

Just as Election 2 was ironically subtitled Harmony is a Virtue, the triad society financed by Sammo Hung in Fatal Move is called Truthfulness, Trust and Loyalty, so with a name like that you just know they're going to be at each other's throats before long, but the film takes a curiously long time deciding what story it wants to tell and how to go about it. The early betrayals by rivals and minions - or rather a minion's girlfriend and her lover - are later mirrored by ones closer to home for both triads and cops when a drugs bust and a botched kidnap attempt lead to gang war, and this section of the film certainly works fairly well. But the film tends to set up too many characters and subplots that it loses interest in, and not always very well: the film spends so long building up Lam Suet's family life that they might as well have painted a target on his back when he made his entrance while, as he admits in the brief making of featurette on the UK DVD, an underused Danny Lee is just another cop chasing triads yet again with nothing much to do.

Is Fatal move a fatal viewing?
What is it about? Why isnt Sammo pictured on the cover(or even mentioned!) obviously someone feels, you need someone young and trendy on the cover to sell it,but when you are as beloved as Sammo is in the the martial arts movie world, you dont.Anyway this film I really enjoyed.
Its not hard to follow,it has some great action and gory violence and isnt over the top(i.e no one flies)and I was never bored at all.

Some of the action scenes are really awesome, particularly the ones including Wu Jing, and the final fight with Samo Hung.
The only problem is that the story is quite poor in the last part of the movie (the last 20 minutes don't make any sense and feel like they rushed the script to get a conclusion). It's a shame. With a little more work on the story, it could've been a hit

What is it about?
Sammo Hung plays Triad boss, Lung. His grip over the Hong Kong criminal empire is beset by betrayals. With troubled brother Tung (Simon Yam) and his lethal hit man, Tin Hung (Wu Jing), Sammo must mercilessly ferret out his enemies while avoiding the hawkish attentions of senior inspector, Danny Lee.

On the surface, you have Wu Jing, Sammo Hung, Simon Yam from "Kill zone". Then you throw in Danny Lee from "The Killer" and on paper, this film has the makings of a intriguing, Hong Kong triad action movie. But without Donnie Yen and Wilson Yip, did it deliver?

Fatal flaws.
Story
They included dialogues and scenes that were better cut off. It has the usual triad trappings and I felt did not seem to add anything new to the genre.
Characters
There were not enough compelling scripts, motives and direction for people to stand out. It relies much on screen presence from big name stars to sell this candy to the audience.
Rewatch value
At 2hrs, it could be a chore for some. Those with realistic expectations will tolerate this sitting once; on a rental perhaps? The only rewatch value would be for the fatal viewings.

Fatal viewings.
Action
I shan't spoil this; there was at least one fight scene that was the highlight of the film that made this movie Fatal viewing.
Cast
If they did not assemble that many big name stars to shoulder this movie, general public may not have given this a look.
Fans
I must strongly point out that those who are interested in HK action, triads, or any of the big name stars would find Fatal move acceptable viewing.

Summary
A miss hit. As a fan of HK films, I can't help wondering about two conflicting things.

I quickly lost interest in this film. There was very little in the way of action and martial arts (although what there was was good) and the story was convoluted and hard to follow.

I switched of mentally about half way through... It just didn't float my boat. I have absolutely no idea what the story was about as it seemed to have no real direction.

I'm not going to waste any more time by reviewing this film further. I wasted enough time just watching and there's not much more I can add anyway - other than a lot of arms get chopped off. A boring film overall.
