Product Description

Fat? Chunky? Less than svelte? So what! In this hilarious and eye-opening book, fat and proud activist/zinester Marilyn Wann takes on Americas' biggest fear—worse than the fear of public speaking or nuclear weapons—our fear of fat.Statistics tell us that about a third of Americans are fat, and common sense adds that just about everyone, fat or thin, male or female, has worried about their appearance. FAT!SO? weighs in with a more attractive alternative: feeling good about yourself at any weight—and having the style and attitude to back it up. Internationally recognized as a fat-positive spokesperson, Wann has learned that you can be absolutely happy, healthy, and successful...and fat. With its hilarious and insightful blend of essays, quizzes, facts, and reporting, FAT!SO? proves that you can be out-and-out fabulous at any size.

From the Author

How I had a really bad day, and why YOU don't have to...
A few years ago, I had a really bad day. First, the guy I was seeing said he was embarrassed to introduce me to his friends because I'm fat. Ouch! Then, Blue Cross told me I couldn't have any health insurance because of my weight. Double ouch!

The funny thing is, I'm not bad looking and I'm not in poor health. I'm just fat.

I decided that I had to speak out against this kind of mistreatment. So I started a zine (short for magazine) called FAT!SO?. It's been the most fun I've ever had.

Thanks to FAT!SO?, I've learned how to say the F-word (fat) with pride...no one can ever hurt me with it again. I've discovered that you can absolutely be happy and healthy and sexy and successful...AND fat! Best of all, I've met hundreds of wonderful people of all sizes who share the FAT!SO? spirit.

Like them, you can learn how to reclaim your body and live healthy at any size. (And have fun doing it!)

Remember why they call it a belly laugh: The FAT!SO? book has more toys and games per page than any other book on the market. It has an animated flip book of a fat chick throwing off her muumuu and dancing in her minidress. It has paper doll fashions for the Venus of Willendorf, that loveable prehistoric goddess statue. It has sassy comebacks, fat history trading cards (the heroes and villains), eye-opening photos of butts and bellies and arms and chins (of all shapes and sizes), plus much, much more.

I invite you to check it out... Because life is too short for self-hatred and celery sticks! Because you don't deserve even one really bad day. Because you DON'T have to apologize for your size!

Size doesn't matter 13 Sep 2003

I think this book is great. It is full of interesting facts and statistics about weght and eating etc. It is light hearted and positive and full of other people's stories abut how they ended up accepting themselves when they were physically different from what is accepted by society. A very positive book, but you may need to read it more than once to really take on board the confidence!!

As a teenager, I have inflicted an unbelievable amount of hatred and abuse on my body. Ms. Wann's remarkably humorous yet poignant book has taught me not only to stop the self-destruction, but also to love the way I look. I may not be there yet, but she has paved the way for me to come full circle and celebrate myself, inside and out.

Marilyn Wann is a national treasure for dispelling the myths fueling fear of eating and the fear of getting fat that infect our society and damage our physical and mental well-being. She makes the vital point that overeating and having a large size are not necessarily a cause and effect. I am a cookbook author and a proponent of Ayurveda, the most ancient health care system in the world, which states that people come in many different natural sizes. Trying to conform to one body type is both unnatural and harmful to longevity. Fearing the very substance that nourishes and sustains us is damaging. Therefore I am thrilled to see Ms. Wann take on this subject so masterfully and in a contemporary context. Well done!
