Tom Vernon is one of my favorite BBC and TV 4 personalities. In the US we were lucky enough to see his work in the series 'Fat Man In France' presented on our Travel Chanel. I began to purchase copies of Tom's books via on-line second hand and rare books sources. They have proved to be wonderful companions that I return to time and again. I have just been rereading 'Fat Man On A Bicycle' and I am once again delighted by the author's prose and by his insights on life, British culture and French culture. I do remain dubious that Tom actually pedalled 'all the way' on any of his trips, especially the ones that were made into videos, but his prose is honest enough and I believe he is one of the greatest 20th Century travel journalists ever to put pen to paper or to bring his travels to television.

Tom Vernon was the reason I got on a bicycle at St Agnes (Isles of Scilly) in June 2010 with the intention of reaching Saxa Vord (far north of the Shetlands archipelago). A 19-stone man who has never done much on a bicycle except occasionally go to work decides to cycle from London to the Mediterranean. The rest is just his gentle observations on the way. When I realised it was thirty years since this was first broadcast on Radio 4 I was shocked, though a refusal to join the Lycra and sinewed-sweaty generation long before this was invented shines through ahead of its time. Enjoy this lolloping account of semi-manufactured stupidity to realise how people were inspired to do memorable things in the time before we all clapped and screamed and faked excruciating enthusiasm.

Backroads of France 29 Nov 2002

Format:Paperback
One could be alone travelling the backroads of France, experiencing all the wonders - yet sitting in ones own armchair.
A very enjoyable book, and very well written..

Pedalling This Book 3 Jan 2006
By Tony Gubba - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I recommend it. It has a nice verbal tang - but perhaps too much about cycling. Perhaps he should have gone by train or soemthing. I went by train and met an eastern european girl who had black hair. Also I wouldn't have done what he does with the flan.
