The name of Peter Twiss first achieved national prominence in March 1956 when, as a test pilot, he gained the World Air Speed Record in the Fairey Delta 2, flying at a speed of 1132 mph over Chichester in Sussex. Seventeen years earlier, in 1939, he had joined the Fleet Air Arm to serve his country in war, seeing action in Fulmars over the convoys to Malta in June 1942, in Seafires during the Operation Torch landings in NW Africa, and as a night fighter flying Mosquitoes.

A marvellous book. Peter Twiss broke the World Air Speed record in 1956 but he'd also been part of the Fleet Air Arm during WWII. This book spans his entire career and is well written with some amusing tales. There's a comprehensive selection of pictures which made me aware of the fact that Peter also had a small cameo appearance in a James Bond film.
This is a neat little package and a splendid biography. I'd recommend it.

Really enjoyed this book. A great story of pioneering aviation, fighting against & circumventing the brick walls of British officialdom & red tape. Not a dull history of Peter Twiss' formative years as a schoolboy etc as many dull autobiographies can be, but straight to the interesting period of his life - albeit interspersed with anecdotes from earlier times.

Have read loads of test pilot type books, this is one of the best and a must for anybody interested in the 1950's quest for speed.
