Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Coding 3-D games such as DarkMatter is an art form, creating the graphics for such a game even more so. Unless you happen to be a talented artist it can seriously hamper the look and feel of the finished product, leaving a great concept with a shoddy feel.

DarkMatter aims to fill the artistic void with a large selection of pre-built and pre-skinned 3-D models and hundreds of textures, which can be applied to any user created objects. The ready-built models are provided in .3DS and .X formats ready for import into a wide variety of modelling programs as well as 3-D gaming creation tools like DarkBasic and Blitz Basic 3-D. The overall quality of the models is good, some of the human figures are a little samey and vehicle wheels have some unfortunate corners but as a whole there’s enough here to populate a reasonable 3-D world without anything looking out of place.

The textures are nicely done and with more than 186 megabytes of images to choose from there’s something for all occasions, neatly stored under headings like sci-fi, urban and natural. The whole package is held together by a custom viewer which allows all of the models and textures to be viewed and selected, the interface is a little clunky but it does it job.

As an added bonus, FastTrak have thought to include an enhancement pack for DarkBasic which adds a series of new commands including multi-playerinclude, an enhancement pack for multi-player support. --Chris Russell

The models are fairly good quality, low poly models which are ideally suited to usage in 3D games.

A variety of models are included, and there is enough content for most types of games, although there are too many military items, and not enough others. For example, there are no "normal guy" or "normal girl" models which you could then take and customize. Some of them are bit tacky. The tanks etc. are pretty good, as are the troop models. The only real problem is that the animation is quite dodgy for some of the models. For example, the troop's firing animation looks as if he is holding a lightweight pistol, when he is more likely to be using a rifle.

3DS versions of the models are included, so you can edit them in your own applications.

The included textures are reasonable, the skyboxes are too low resolution to be of any real use.

The browser application is a simple affair, but works well, although as it runs in fullscreen mode it isn't possible to view the browser in one window and your code in another.

these models are great they come in 2 different formats .x and .3ds they have ready made textures that are in 1 file, and they are fully animated. It also has some skyboxes and Skysphere with it, they can be loaded with just about any programming language. all in all a great asset to a programmer.

One problem with Dark Basic (especially the new DBPro) is that it doesn't come with a lot of options for making a first-person shooter. Dark Matter solves that problem, with a wide variety of characters, weapons and such like that will suit most FPS programmers. Just don't expect to be able to do anything else with it. The models and textures are not cutting edge, but hey it's better than anything you could make yourself!
