Amazon.co.uk Review

The success of The Fast Show has always relied on the number of sketches devoted to your favourite characters. While this, the last ever series, suffers a little for the loss of Caroline Aherne (presumably busy with The Royle Family?), and from the fact that those sketches based on a single catch-phrase or joke--Jessie's Diets, "Which was nice", and even the cough-prone Bob Fleming--seem to be running out of steam, the show's more rounded creations are all back and still going strong. Swiss Tony has emerged from therapy a new man, Colin Hunt gets the sack from his beloved office job and Ralph struggles on with his unrequited love for handyman Ted. There are new characters: a ragged, Charlton Heston-like astronaut who runs into different situations screaming, "What year is this? Who is the President?!", and a cynical, middle-aged woman who meets every note of human kindness she encounters with a sarcastic "Hah!", are particular standouts. However, as always, the series works best when the regular characters collide with contemporary phenomena, so here we have Indecisive Dave being phoned by a friend who's appearing on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?; the "Suits You!" tailors harassing an incognito Johnny Depp; the cheeky criminal stealing a child's Pokémon cards; John Actor playing hard-nosed interior designer Laurence Lewellyn Monkfish in Changing Monkfish; the send-up of recent gangster Brit flicks A Right Royal Barrel of Cockney Monkeys (populated entirely by pseudo-cockney public schoolboys); and a sketch in which Channel 9's gardening presenter is assisted by a topless woman. Nice Dimmocks! --Paul Philpott

5.0 out of 5 stars hmmm? isnt it? Marvellous!, 20 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Fast Show - The Last Fast Show Ever [DVD] [1994] (DVD)
The Fast Show makes its DVD debut with a collection of the best clips from the Last Fast Show Ever, which was shown in three parts over Christmas 2000.

For the first time viewers can skip to straight to their favourite scenes or charcter, which is why the Fast Show is perfectly suited to the DVD format - nice! Fast Show fans wont be disappointed as the DVD features 5 minutes of footage that wasnt shown on the original broadcast, excellent animated menus and 7 minutes of out-takes - all though these arent as funny as you might imagine.

The sketches included show Johnny Depp visiting the Suits You tailors, Ron Manager defecting to ITV and a brilliant Lock, Stock send up - 'Its a right royal cockney barrel of monkeys!'

All the old favourites make an appearance and there are a couple of new characters, such as John Thomson's confused time travel, who doesnt know where (or when) he is!

The highlights include Dave Angel (eeeyyy!), Unkly Alf and Black Painter, who, as always loses the plot with hilarious results.

The disc is only let down by the 75 minute running time. If the BBC can fit a whole series of Blackadder or League of Gentlemen on to one disc, surely the could have got more on to this one?

Running time aside, this is one disc that you will no doubt watch repeatedly, until you have memorised every catchphrase, and recited them to you mates down the pub on a friday night. Fast Show on DVD? Suits you sir!

...why are the BBC short-changing us by only giving us a compilation of the final series rather than the whole thing? There's certainly more than enough room on the disc for the three episodes in their entirety. Are they just planning to flog us the complete edition when they've exhausted the previous series on disc a la George Lucas and his regular 'enhanced' reissues of the 'Star Wars' videos? There's some really good stuff here, but I'd recommend waiting till they do it properly: buy half-hearted discs like this and you'll only encourage them to give you short measures in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick, snappy catchphrase comedy at its best, 13 Nov 2000
This review is from: The Fast Show - The Last Fast Show Ever [DVD] [1994] (DVD)
The now sadly departed Fast Show, was the first and best of the popular "Catchphrase" shows, built around a number of different characters, the idea was to fire these short (now widely used) phrases at the viewer, leaving next to no time to think how stupendous it may have been. Sadly "The Fast Show" is no longer with us, but they stopped when they were on top, and this Video has a special collection of some of the most popular characters, ... So if you liked the show, you`ll love this, so go out and buy it now !
