Fashions in Makeup is a unique book in its field: a comprehensive history of cosmetics. In this highly praised volume, Richard Corson chronicles the pursuit of beauty from Ancient Egypt to the present day. Concentrating mainly on makeup traditions of the Western world, with examples from other countries included for comparison, Corson describes the cosmetics with which men and women have decorated their faces, how they have applied them, and what they looked like as a result.

4.0 out of 5 stars Accurate, professional, quite interesting 3 April 2012
By Ren
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
A very interesting work on the history of the vanity, it really fills the gap in my girlfriend's curiosity.
I can only find one disappointing aspect: it is too encyclopedic though it deals with make-up. I would like it to have a wider visual aspect (face charts, visual curiosities, more images of artifacts and ancient objects), despite the fact that it is very well-written.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Academic 12 Aug 2004
By Chris
Format:Hardcover
On the above review this sounded like the perfect gift for somebody starting a make up course at college. However, although I don't doubt the reference value of the book , the style is overly academic, with no colour illustrations.
Glamourous it ain't.

5.0 out of 5 stars fashion in makeup from aincient to modern times 31 Aug 2012
By rmc mua
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
a valued addition to my collection. this publication although not colour printed is a resource of incredible refference and information a book i would recomend to any other person with seriouse aspirations to become a makeup artist. not only dose it give incredible information on how civilisations have developed there own cosmetics through out the ages.i think this book was first 1972 and it must be remmembered that this book is not a how to or step by step guide to aplication it is a historical account of cosmetics origins, aesthetic uses, spiritual uses and religiouse uses through out the ages. i think it was worth every penny i paid for and hope it will serve as a valuable refference in my library as i progress in my chosen career.
