This compendium of fashion ADVERTS - I put this in capitals because I myself did not realise this beforehand - is extremely interesting. There is about an equal balance between male and female clothing including accessories a few children's adverts. There is a particularly large section on swim wear. Although I would point out to those especially interested in menswear that adverts were geared towards women even in male clothing as women had new buying power in this decade. As it appears to me all the adverts are American and so have a high focus on leisurewear.

I used this advert for a costume project on the 1950's and it was an extremely good sourcebook for what ordinary American people may wear. What especially aided me in my task was that prices are often included in the adverts, also that you always have the year and brand name included because of the books layout.

Personally I would recommend this book to anybody who wants for a sourcebook but already knows about the fifties as it includes many American fashions that I found fascinating. Or equally anybody with an interest in the 1950's. Though I should add this book does not include any overtly sexist adverts such as 'You mean a woman can open it too?!' so if this is what you are wanting this is not a book for you.

Beautiful! 31 Jan 2009
By B. Sanchez - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I love this book! I bought it mainly because I was doing a period piece in one of my classes and needed some refrence as to what people wore back in the 50s! I'm an avid fan of the era, so this is great insight to the bizzare ads (children's perm products, bermuda shorts with little hearts for men???!)

disappointing 11 Jun 2008
By pickyeditor - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I love period advertising, and I love fashion, so this seemed like the perfect book...until I got it. The book was subtitled "Vintage Fashion and Beauty Ads", so that's what I expected. What I got was 95 pages of men's clothing -- tons of ads for ties and underwear -- 9 pages of children's clothing, and 70 pages of women's "fashion and beauty". There were more pages devoted to men's hair products than women's, if I counted correctly. I didn't order this to look at Hopalong Cassidy cowboy boots...I ordered it to see FASHION AND BEAUTY ads. VERY disappointing!!

Cool book...but... 30 Nov 2007
By C. Mett - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Ordered this cute cook for a girlfriend of mine who's a fashion freak. The book itself is unique and cool, but it arrived with a big cut down the middle of the front of the book! Couldn't even give it to her. I'll hang on to it, but sure hope no one else receives one in that condition.
