Fabulous book 30 Jan 2006
By claire
Format:Paperback
When I was putting together my portfolio for my uni interviews I was advised to make a sketchbook of fashion designs as your final pieces of work usually lose a lot of life but a sketchbook shows your creativity and conveys your interest in the subject.
I had thousands of ideas for clothes but I was struggling to get my ideas on to paper mainly because I thought my drawings had to be perfect and to be honest my figure drawings aren't brilliant especially when I am only doing quick sketches. So I bought this book in the hope that it would help me out a little and it really has.
Being a textiles student I already knew about some of the things in the book like mood boards and trend forecasts and so on, but this book encouraged me to be creative and develop my own style. For example I had always used colouring pencils for all of my designs because I thought it looked neat and tidy but the book teaches you that anything can be used including paint, glitter, fabric, newspaper in fact anything you want.
This book has inspired me and given me so much confidence and it has helped me to make original fashion designs and to present my ideas in a creative manner.
Now every time I sit down to do some fashion sketches I always have this book close by just in case I need a little inspiration or some reassurance about my ability. I am very glad I got this little gem.

I have really enjoyed reading and looking at this book....

The illustrations are great and in colour (unlike other fashion books I have brought!)The styles of work are very varied and give you tips for layouts and presenting your mood & design boards. I have only had it few days and it has already helped to improve my design drawings. I think this is an excellent choice for those of you (if like me) who are preparing work for portfolio for University interviews!

The book is set out as a course to follow aimed at first at beginners then building in difficulty. Some of the "projects" you would have to be majorly disciplined to follow and need many hours. But they are valid projects, some very similar to those I have been doing at college on my Fashion BTEC. You can of course pick and choose what you do. It does make sense to read all of the projects as there is loads to inspire you for doing fashion illustrations, info on working drawing layouts and sugguestions of different materials to draw with. I have found I want to read it rather than feel I should ! This is suitable for a beginner or experienced designer, there are many levels to this book.
