I bought two of these, one for each of my daughters, ages 7 and 9. They play with this for hours.
It works by putting make up on the blank faces (on paper). You can draw in the hair with the colored pencils. My girls loved designing different hairstyles. Its almost as much fun as putting the make up on the model.
I only wish it came with more sheets of the paper. If your kids like doing this, they will run out of the sheets quickly.
I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because of the make up tray. Its flimsy. The brushes are ok.

My daughter just loves this set. It has a great guide that she can use to learn to apply make-up and she can use the make-up on the included faces to practice, then apply it to her own face. The make-up is not very heavy, so she doesn't look like a clown like she does with my make-up!
