This book is brilliant. The interviews cover 95% of the challenges and problems an advertising or fashion photographer would face, from how to get a foot in the door, to the translation of editorial into advertising work. It's extremely comprehensive and well written, including diagrams, lots of detail and lots of honesty from the photographers interviewed. I think the MAP photographers are a little bit overrepresented (the author worked for MAP), and I am not convinced these are the BEST photographers in the world. But they are probably more giving and give more insight than the Nick Knights and Mario Testinos of the world. And it can't be denied that the shots are visionary, original and downright gorgeous.
Every student (or enthusiast, art buyer or agent) should own a copy of this book.

Very helpful for beginners (and probably advanced photographers too!) If you're into fashion photography etc, then it's really great because you can read through interviews from people who are actually in the industry (as opposed to some books that just say they're great photographers or whatever). There's a little section where they show you how they light particular photos etc, tips on how to get along in the industry etc.
Really great! Worth it :)

I ordered this from Amazon as a gift for a photography student and it went down a storm! Really beautiful pictures and some great text to sink your teeth into. I am no professional myself, but even I could see the quality to these fashion photos and it was a well recieved gift.

Recommend!

I liked the book. the images are gorgeous but i expected more, when I mean more is more exmaples on how to position your camera to get a specific angle.

This is essentially a fairly thin coffee table book. There is very little information on lighting and technique. Each artist provides one lighting diagram which is almost useless - it's rendered in interesting 3-D CAD models, but contains no information on equipment, distances, watt seconds, modifiers, or really anything that you'd expect from a lighting diagram if you read professional photography publications.

I'd recommend giving this one a pass, unless you're quite fond of one of the contributing photographers and want a handful of images from one of their shoots.

I'm frankly amazed that the publishers decided to call this a "workshop" book.

Fashion and Advertising: The World's Top Photographers Workshop is a collection of interviews with seasoned professional photographers. Ranging from self-taught to college-educated, these photographers have assisted and worked alongside world-renowned artists such as Nick Knight and Mario Testino and have editorial credits including Italian Vogue, Pop, i-D, Dazed and Confused, and Numero.
The interviewer, Magdalene Keaney, engages photographers such as John Akehurst, Richard Bush, Elaine Constantine, Dan Holdsworth, Alexi Lubomirski, Solve Sundsbo, and Paul Wetherell in conversations covering networking and important industry relationships, conceptual workflow, equipment, setups, and much more. Each photographer was chosen for his or her area of photographic expertise and aesthetic. The interviews are structured around these aesthetics, ranging from nudes and landscapes to digital imaging and celebrities, and examine how each photographer achieves his or her "look" and their experiences during the process.
Included in each photographer's section are lighting diagrams, information regarding the photographers essential equipment, a mini biography, and suggested readings by the photographer. Along with conceptual and technical content, the book showcases the work of the interviewed photographers on beautiful semi-gloss paper.
As a photographer I am constantly inspired and learn from other photographers. I've used this book as a starting point for concepts and creative workflow on a number of my projects as well as referring to it for technical help. Fashion and Advertising has a permanent spot on my bookshelf when it's not on my worktable.
