Book Description

9 April 2013
The American farmhouse represents integrity, ingenuity, capability and America's rural and agricultural heritage. Today the farmhouse is a survivor from another era and can be found either in the process of constant evolution or carefully preserved in the original state by the owners. Photographers Steve Gross and Sue Daley set out to document 20 farmhouses of America's east coast. Some are working farms that have been passed down from generation to generation, others are farmhouses that have been rescued from abandonment and neglect and are now furnished with handmade items and folk art. Accompanying over 200 stunning photographs of the houses exteriors, interiors and surrounding gardens and land, will be text discussing the history of the homes and the families that proudly maintain them. From a 300 year old Sydenham House in Newark, New Jersey to Sylvester Manor on Shelter Island, in the same family since the 18th century and now a CSA organic farm, this is a look at American culture through that most celebrated and quintessential building style, the farmhouse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I was hoping that it would be 16 April 2013
By Elizabeth James - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I was worried when I ordered this book that I would be disappointed, as it seems so many of the magazines or decorating books that claim to be country or farmhouse decorating today, are in actuality more contemporary style than country/farmhouse. Here and there there are some contemporary touches to a room, but they're subtle and not at all overwhelming.

If you love farmhouses and their history, real farmhouse/country decorating like I do, then you will love this book. It's as if you're actually looking into the homes and lives of real people and how they actually live.

My 18 year old daughter, who shares my passion for decorating, commented that this was the best decorating book that she has ever seen. She was fascinated not only by the pictures, but by the history of each farmhouse.

Thank you, Steve Gross and Susan Daley, for doing such an incredible job on this book, as no matter what decorating style you prefer, it all boils down to farmhouses and farmhouse decorating are our roots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Single page is artistic or fascinating-awesome! 12 July 2013
By Joey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The authors have assembled a beautiful book of artistry and photography and it leaves you wanting to have a farmhouse of your own.
The approx 20 farmhouses reviewed each tell a story about the owners desire to create an artistic atmosphere within their home.
Most are antique and classic American colonial themes, but many are european or reflect the long history of the farm.
I've gone through it several times, and each time see new thigs in the photographs that are quite interesting.
The authors make you feel as you know the homeowners and understand the meaning of the photographs of the interior of the farmhouses.
A wonderful book from cover to cover!!

5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T JUDGE THIS BOOK BY IT'S COVER! 8 Jun 2013
By harold turpin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I WAS CURIOUS ABOUT THIS BOOK BECAUSE I GREW UP IN A FARMHOUSE IN TROY, KANSAS. HOWEVER, THIS BOOK IS NOTHING LIKE THE FARM I GREW UP ON. THIS BOOK CONTAINS MOSTLY EARLY AMERICAN NEW ENGLAND STYLE FARMHOUSES DECORATED WITH ANTUQUES OF VARIOUS AGES. EACH CHAPTER CONTAINS A DIFFERENT FARM WITH GREAT PICTURES OF THE OUTSIDE SCENERY AND INSIDE DECOR..
