From the Author
For people who love simple food but don't know the seasons
Do you wonder when home-grown asparagus is in season? Do you know why not to buy El Santa strawberries? Do you set out for the supermarket, a long list of ingredients in hand, hunt down every one, only to come home to overly-complicated recipes? THE FARMERS' MARKET COOKBOOK will teach you when asparagus is mature, why not to refrigerate tomatoes, and how cucumbers should taste. The secret? Go to the market (or where-ever you shop for fresh food) and buy what looks good. Then read about, say, Jerusalem artichokes, and learn to make a simple soup with leeks. If you like it, you'll cook without a recipe the next time. That's how simple good food is. Shopping without lists and cooking without recipes are two of life's great pleasures. Eating food the way YOU like it is another. Forget the celebrity chef culture and learn what YOU want to learn about food instead...
