It's easy to forget just how much the world changed in the 20th century. Sturt's A Farmer's Life captures a world in the midst of change. Ending just before the hurlyburly of World War I, Sturt's gentle reminiscent of his uncle, James Smith, depict a gentle, though extensively detailed, reminiscence of a now extinct rural agrarian life. It's not challenging, and it won't change your life, but it provided me with an escape from my fast paced work life every evening as I read it in 15 minutes intervals in the night before sleep.
